Hi All

Getting a little confused on which one to pull the trigger on. I've put a deposit on a std 7.5 GTI. Looking to see it on Sat. But now im thinking it might make more sense to buy a MK 7 GTI PP for the diff. I have read the one in the PP is a locking LSD whilst a normal one is on the GTI controlled mechanically. Will this make a big diff if driven hard on the roads? Im not planning on taking the car on track. The cost diff for a low mileage PP is within a few K vs a newer GTI 7.5

Would love some opinions on the pros and cons of each and whether the locking diff in the pp is worth it over the electronic one in the mk 7.

Thanks

As a mk7 pp owner I’d say get the newest one.

I’ve never really noticed the diff, but maybe because I don’t really know what it does and never driven it without it ha. It’s a good car, but I think the upgrades that come with the 7.5 outweigh the diff.

What bhp does the 7.5 have as standard now? Guessing they’ve upped it from the 220 is was (230 for pp).

It has 230 hp as STD. But it doesn't have the same diff as the pp mk7. You have to buy the latest performance pack mk7.5 to get that. I just don't want buyers remorse over the diff if it really makes a difference Vs the normal XDS system

Had a VRS with XDS then my current one which has the plate diff and 230 engine (in other words the previous gen Golf GTI PP driveline).

The plate diff is a little more noticable but can't say it makes a huge difference

..just to add it is said that the plate diff on the VRS230 is set up a less aggressively than in the GTI but never driven one so can't make a comparison.

It's nice though, you have to get used to keeping on or increasing the power through bends to make it work - the line tightens up rather than the more usual response of washing wide/understeering

PP has a Haldex diff between the axles up front. GTI just brakes the spinning wheel. E-diff or XDS, or some other silly acronym.

Plated diffs are aggressive f'ckers and a real handful. Very noisy, bind on lock and require periodic rebuilds to replace worn plates......unless you get one tailored for road use and even then they're not smooth or maintenance free. OEMs don't use plate diffs for that reason.

Mild diffs for road use make more sense. Plated diffs can spin both wheels at once, which is about as much use as a perforated condom on wet corners if you're right foot is an anvil.

The 230VRS and GTI PP have a diff with 10 clutch plates in them which modulates the drive to either wheel according to how unloaded the inner wheel becomes; that's what I mean by 'plate' diff.

I think you're confusing it with the old Salisbury differential which, I agree, having driven a Mini fitted with one is a real handful but they are old tech now and not used in mainstream production cars.
