Looking to purchase a s4 avant soon and have found one I like, my dad has gone to have a look at it for me as it's 15 mins from him rather than 2 hours from me and he confirmed the car was in very good condition, unfortunately the salesmen haven't been very helpful since asking about the service history as they've not chased it up as they said they would as it's missing. If I was to contact Audi would they give me any information they have on the vehicle even if I'm not the owner? Thanks

I personally would steer clear if the original service book was "missing".

Service history on these cars is important, particularly to confirm regular oil changes. The engine has oil fed chain tensioners so regular (more often than the variable service schedule) oil changes are important.

There was a recent thread on here about these cars that is worth searching for.

That was my main concern after reading the horror stories about the timing chains, bit gutted that the garage have messed me about and don't seem that bothered about making a sale as I really do like the look of the car

Anybody recognise the car?

The MOT history check doesn't show any major horror stories but it was highlighted at the last MOT it needed new rubber all around i.e. £600 for decent rubber.

Looks presentable but worth seeing if an audi stealer can print out the service history they have. Very strange regarding the service book though and it would make me cautious too.

P.S. Do check the seams under the roof rails and the around the 3rd brake light on the tailgate as these are a known corrosion weak points. Had both on mine.

Pictures show it's got Bridgestone potenzas on it all round so I'm assuming they've been changed, they did say anything the mot flags up as a fail or advisory would be taken care of and thanks for the info on the corrosion, I didn't know about that

Also check date of registration as March 2016 was when the CO2 related tax came in and this could be a £500 a year car. Other than that it looks very tidy and a bit too polished to me.

Wheels are immaculate.
Brake discs look pretty poor, probably £500 to change discs and pads all round.
There looks to be a crease in the rear bumper where it meets to tailgate, you can see the reflection show it up in the video.

Lastly if the car is 2 hours away from you it will be hassle if you have problems as they will want to do the work. I suggest you try and find something closer.

Checked and the tax is £535 a year 😳, my dad did say the brakes looked abit worn but could sort them out myself easily enough, good spot on the rear bumper, looks like a couple of creases on the top, didn't see them. It comes with a 6 month warranty but didn't say who it was with but it could be increased to a year or two, didn't think about having to return it to them for warranty work. Garage is in Cardiff and I'm in Coventry so abit of a trek if they want it back for any rework needed

For clarity I have nothing to do with this dealer but do know the car and previous owner.

"The big one" has just been done and previous owner took good care of it. It sneaks under the old tax rules too.

Nice looking car Dr G and definitely the sort of thing I would look at but unfortunately slightly out my budget at the minute but will keep it in mind 👍🏼

wow! nearly 9k for that 2005 Black one?!

Is this the going rate for a decent one now?

Fingers and toes crossed, I'll be looking at these in few months time - but was hoping 6k would get me a 7 or 8 out of 10 condition example?
Or is this wishful thinking now?

Also considering the B6 S4, but again, put off by the chains/guides issue -
however, if that work has been done by previous owner - would/could the chain go again anyway?!

My budgets about the same too at the minute, I did find a black one up near Durham that was around £5.5-£6k and had just had the engine rebuilt, can't remember what year it was though!

Yeah, that's a bit more like it price-wise. I mean for £9k, your in C5 RS6 territory!!

I had a 2000 S4 Avant previously

loved it, but big bills were round the corner, and I didn't have the funds to do it, so sold it to a young lad who's brought back to good health.

Although not a VAG car, when i bought the XFR it didn't have a service history book with it.
Turned out that the previous owner had it and it was passed on to me.

I was able to contact the previous owner via email, from the paperwork that was supplied with the car (previous service).
Also i was able to obtain service information from the Jaguar garages, where the car was serviced.

I'd still approach with caution though and have it checked out thoroughly.

I've seen a C5 RS6 Avant for just under £7,000! 🙈

I did think about trying to locate the previous owner, I would of thought the garage would of done that themselves and their attitude has put me off dealing with them unfortunately otherwise I would of been driving it already

The difficulty there is that when you look at the 'cheap' cars there's almost always a glaring "don't buy it because" that comes with it. That's exactly why they're cheap. With these cars, 99 times in 100 the cost to bring it up to the level of a known good one is more than simply buying the good one to start with.

Throw the name of the dealer with the blue one into Google too!

I think unless you're incredibly jammy £5k is going to be scrap. That's really not a lot more than the price of doing the chains and all the other little bits you find when you're in there.

Aslong as the bodywork and main drivetrain components were good I don't mind doing the smaller stuff, just don't fancy dropping the engine on the drive to do the chains, One of the first things I usually do is check places out on the Internet for reviews etc, just haven't with the Cardiff place for done reason think it was my heart over ruling my head in this instance
