A VW UP! is not a premium car. Not even the GTi.
Of course not if you're comparing it to Jag/Bmw/Mercs/Porsche etc..

But for what it is, a city car with low running costs, it's premium.

What part of “in comparison to the competition” don’t you understand?
You believe what you want.
I’m judging it against what any normal person would deem comparable. Does the interior have a premium feel when compared to a Citroen C1? Yes. Does it when compared to a Mercedes S-Class. No.

I recently sold our 2013 High Up which was a nice enough car but let down by a noisy gearbox which is by all accounts a common fault.

The GTi really appeals and it will be interesting to see what the predicted residual value will be after three years; I don't buy new cars but if the residuals are decent this could be a cheapish new car.

Is the engine exactly the same as the 90bhp TSI version, with different mapping, or are there fundamental changes?

Tempted to chop my m240i in to get a TSI/GTI as a daily and something more interesting in the garage for the weekends

I was just reading a new copy of CAR, and they featured a Smart 4 4 Brabus, with 109bhp. £15 shy of £20k! By that comparison it's a bargain!

From the EVO review —

“It’s essentially the same engine found in the TSI-powered Up, but boost has been upped and an intercooler added. The changes take power from 87bhp to 113bhp, and torque from 118lb ft to 147lb ft.”

Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?

Manual gearbox too - For under 14K, aside from the inability to win at Top Trumps (or maybe get all my dive gear in), I can't see much to dislike.

The UP! GTI's approach reminds me of the Daihatsu Charade GTti. Similar power to weight ratio as well.

Back then though, the little GTti was in a field of it's own and could mix it with MK2 Golf GTIs. These days however, with just about every conceivable market sector covered (a kazillion choices of SUVs/Xovers anyone?) the UP GTI will just disappear into a sea of assorted other city cars and hatchbacks, save for the 80s side stripes, to make it stand out a little bit.

I don't get the fascination personally. I would rather spend £14K on a used Golf GTI. The UP! is a 'My first GTI' for 17 year olds if ever I saw one, but if people want a Duplo GTI over the Technical Lego GTI, fair enough. Just don't even go there with the silly "Junior Golf GTI" comments.

Or it's a car for people who also have a GTI or R in their garage already and want something different. In fact, as I mentioned above, my dealer said that most interest has came from more mature men who were adding it to their garage, rather than it replacing a particular car. I've had numerous Golf GTIs, and currently have both a manual Golf R hatch and a new Golf R estate, and I can honestly say the up! GTI is more fun than them all. It might not be as dynamically accomplished, it's certainly nowhere near as fast or as comfortable, but in the current day it just feels right, the simplicity is almost an antidote to cars that could fairly be called rather anodyne. It has charm and character, and for a VW those qualities are rare.

I fall into that category.

It's easy to compare it to something used that's a better car for similar money, I mean you can buy a VX220 for similar money, just for an example.

It only really makes sense to compare it to other new cars of similar value surely?

Seems VW have massively underestimated demand for the up! GTI. The introductory finance rate and deposit contribution has been pulled and dealers are talking about 11-month lead times and contacting customers offering refunds on build deposits.

My attitude is that it will come when it comes, but for those who need a car, or who were promised it would arrive in June/July, I can understand their frustration.

This annoys me about VW.
I ordered a New Midnight Blue Golf R in 2016. Was told 3 month delivery and given an online build tracker.
It never moved past "At the factory awaiting build date" for 3 months.
Then they contacted me to say the order is zero'd while they re tool for the Mk7.5 and my colour was dropped.
They offered me a Mk7.5 at no extra cost but had no idea on delivery times so I got a refund.

In the time leading to the news I contacted them several times asking why the delay, and telling them the internet is reporting a stoppage of production to re tool.
They denied it.

They presume they are doing you a favour selling you a car, and don't deserve our money.
Hopefully Donald Trump will wake them up with a few taxes biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

I bought a Subaru WRX instead driving

Had a call along those lines this afternoon from the dealer I spoke to about possibly ordering one in late March / early April. My mum quite likes it and sees it as a fun replacement for the ZR105 she's had new since '03.

They basically wanted to make me aware that any order placed this month might not get delivered until very late '18 or early '19. I thought that was pretty decent tbh as at this stage I've not put any £££ down for one but had made it clear an order was pretty likely, so I guess they're doing it to cover themselves rather than misleading anyone going forward.

Bit of a shame but it's not as though this hasn't happened with other in demand VW's before (as shown in the previous post with an R).

One of the guys at work picked his UP GTI around a month ago, he ordered it the last week of December and was the first one in the cambridgeshire area with it. Sounds really rice and runs around like a little rocket.

I will try and get better pictures.

The order books only opened on the 6th February, so it’s likely he grabbed a dealer ordered car.

I’ve ordered the same colour, red with a black roof, plus climate control, upgraded audio, city braking pack, and a few other bits.

Yeah he must have done, just looked at the date of when I took the photos and its 13th Feb. Either the dealer specced out the car he has or he was allowed to spec the dealer car himself because he has most the options. I think he has a good relationship with his dealer, he had a Polo before this car and before that a Golf.

He was originally after a Polo GTI but wanted a manual car, I mentioned the Up GTI to him and within 2 weeks he had a order in.

Hi all,

I too was swayed by reading and watching reviews of the new Up GTi. My wife has had a Up Move for the past 2 years and always find myself more often than not driving it more than my own car, even though it only has 1.0 litre, 3 cylinder, 60bhp engine and very little in the way of creature comforts it is simple, handles very well and uses very little fuel.

My main car is an F10 BMW M5, which is where my interest in the Up! GTi started. The main problem with the M5 is that it is so quick and so thirsty, its very hard to enjoy a car like this in the UK. So basically you never get to use that sort of performance on british roads on a daily basis, maybe on a quick sprint down a B road or down a deserted motorway late at night but the majority of roads are so potholed or covered in speed cameras these days that it kind of spoils the enjoyment. Yes the car is very comfortable on a long journey, in-between the stops to refuel that is, but then anything newish these days tend to drive well and be comfortable enough that is itsn't going to make that much difference what it is!

So with this in mind, I went and test drove an Up GTi with the intention of selling my BMW and using the diesel scrappage scheme to trade in my car, a trusty 2002 Golf TDi that i've done a 1/4 of a million miles in! This then makes the new Up! a car very cheap indeed, as I was offered £1800 for the Golf and I could get the Up completely specced to the hilt with every option using an online broker for around £13k! Very appealing!

The test drive went well and I can echo most of the reviews, its quick enough to be fun and big enough inside to be comfortable all in all a great all round package. There is something very satisfying about driving a small car with not too much power, it somehow makes it more fun to drive! It also sounds very nice inside too, obviously this is down to a sound box but even so, it works very well I thinkl! Add to this options such as, panoramic sunroof, auto lights, heated seats, climate control, reverse camera and upgraded speakers and the package becomes even more appealing!
But something I can't really understand is why are people are slagging it off so much for not being quick enough or sharp enough or for being too expensive! "Why didn't they use this engine", "Why didn't they put this in it", "The steering is a bit vague" etc etc...It is what it is, its a cheap, useable car which is just right for the UK roads, its not so firmly sprung that its going to shake the st out of you and annoy you over the potholes and its not so fast that its going to drink fuel like its going out of style. Its just a simple fun car, which is why it appeals to me and many others and which is something that will be more in the real world than my 560bhp BMW.

So I was sold and ready to do a deal! I wanted a black one with 5 doors, just to make it a little easier to get the little boy's car seat in and out, plus I also think it looks better as a five door as I don't like the rear windows on the 3 door, just personal preference! I phoned up the local dealer and tried to get them to match the broker deal, which they said they wouldn't but said there was some wiggle room! So I was told to call back the next day as to use the scrappage scheme the car had to be ordered by 31st March and registered before the 1st June 2018! I was very eager to get the car ordered but was told that because of the popularity they were only building 700 car's this year and orders were now being put on hold as they couldn't cope with the demand! So if i ordered today for instance I could be waiting at least 42 weeks if not longer to get the car! I just think this is ridiculous to release such a car as this that's going to have such broad appeal and for them not to prepare for the demand as by VW's standards, this is a cheap car so I think that if they were in their right mind they should've predicted how popular it might be and prepared themselves to cope with.

VW have apparently taken 3000 orders for it and all 700 cars allocated to the UK for this year have been sold. A lot of people who ordered on the 6th February, or within a few days after, were quoted 12 week lead times, which it transpires is never going to happen. I didn’t talk about lead times with my dealer, and to be honest I’m not going to bother, the tracker says the order is at stage 2, which means it has progressed further than some people who ordered much before me. I’d like to think VW will pull it out the bag and I’ll get it for 1st September, but who knows. Either way, VW have massively underestimated demand for this car.
