it was one of their revenue streams traditionally though, the inflated hand-back charges, and when it is a big company versus a private individual it is often quite easy one to win for them.
Indeed. But I have to say that the charges don’t seem to be inflated these days. The tyres were a pisstake but other charges were reasonable. For example we were charged £100 for a missing Citroen key - dealer had quoted £125. FWIW said:

I lost a Tiguan key.. bought a second hand one for £15, didn't get it programmed.. they didn't question it.. :-p
Damn! Missed a trick there! FFS :haha: va1o said:
I’ve been caught out the other side from that, as I bought a car from auction once and didn’t realise until I got home the spare was from another car. I asked BCA and they weren’t interested and didn’t help. Not a Tiguan though
I had a new car where the second key didn't work. I wonder how often it happens and people never notice as they only use one of the keys.va1o said:

My R is due to go back in March. A few dings and scuffs but nothing too bad. Amazingly it's still on the original tyres after 21K miles though. I had them checked just before Christmas and they were still legal by a couple of mm but it may be that I need to swap them. Anyone know what the cheapest acceptable brand is (standard Cadiz alloys)? Again I'm not sure if this works out cheaper for me to swap them or leave it to VWFS (would assume the former with tyres and VW!)?
They have guidelines on tyres being near original spec i think, be careful buying cheapys. Get a depth gauge you might be alright.

I've just had a call from BCA my Scirroco R is being inspected on the 13th Feb and then collected on the 20th. They said they do it this way so you have a chance to arrange your own repairs if required. This was news to me but sounds like a decent idea. The car is financed with VWFS btw.
They do mate, but you try finding a sprayer/repairer in that period lol. I ran the risk of getting repairs done and hoping they'd be ok, but they wasn't satisfactory, and when he told me why i couldn't argue....it would had been cheaper waiting on the work they noticed...but maybe not the ones they didnt, i'd had a dent repairs on the other side on the swage line that i'm sure would had cost a fair bit.
The BCA guy who i thought would be my enemy when inspecting and noticing this situation was actually sound as a pound and felt sorry for me.

Is this true? Ive not read anything anywhere that said the tyres need to be the same budget as the originals. It does say same specification but that is just size, load and rating surely. Ive put budgets on mine that goes back next month. Cost £100 per corner less than the contis that where on it.
If they did have an issue about brand then they would list the acceptable brands. Who decides what is not acceptable if they did.

IIRC it is that they need to have at least the same performance ratings, i.e. the wet, efficiency and noise. And of course be the same size/load/speed.Ive put budgets on mine that goes back next month. Cost £100 per corner less than the contis that where on it.

Yes, that’s what the BVRLA guidelines say. There’s a A-G scale for wet grip and rolling resistance, and low/moderate/high noise. Some of the ditchfinders have pretty poor ratings.essayer said:

Yeah they do, I'd be annoyed if I bought a second hand Golf R and it had some really naff tyres on it so I can see why they want like for likeTomScrut said:

i'd say all those things are complete givens. It's more about not replacing premium tyres with st ones.
Just looked in the book and it says they need to comply with the manufacturers recommended class of tyre. So that doesnt mean the same tyres as was on the car. That will mean then that there will be somewhere a list of the recommended minimum class of tyres for each manufacturer?Anyone find this information for VW?
I had an Octavis VRS go back a few months ago and for the scuffs (2 on front bumper, 1 on rear wheel arch but hidden by door) and scratches on wheels and worn tyres it cost me a grand total of £48.
BCA who recover the cars have a 2 metre rule, if it can't be seen from 2 meters away it's not chargeable.
The car appeared on Auto Trader a couple of weeks ago and the scuffs were visible on the photos so they hadn't been repaired!

I recently handed back an Audi A4 which had been keyed twice. One scratch on the bonnet and one scratch down three panels on the nearside.
I've not had the final paperwork from VWFS just yet but the BCA inspection man was pretty lenient and his inspection sheet suggested a £295 charge to fix the damage. That seemed pretty reasonable to me compared to what a dealer would've charged if I'd had it repaired myself before I handed it back.
