cupra R shaking steering wheel

Hi all,

Have a 54 plate cupra r (bam) anything above 50mph when I put the brakes on the steering wheel starts to shake as soon as I lift off the peddle it stops.

Have done the following:

• Have new brake discs and pads front and rear
• Wheel balancing (wouldn't be anyway, as doesn't do it all the time only when braking above 50mph)

• brake fluid checked and brakes bled.
• tyre pressure???

New discs are not warped (have been checked using run out or whatever.. Can't remember the name of the machine)

Any ideas?

Really pissing me off to be honest.

Was the disc mating surface to the hub cleaned up and checked for run-out prior to fitting?

Local Ford dealer tried everything to stop a similar issue on my 13 Fiesta ST.
New brakes, pads, a new wheel, at least 3 balances and alignments, all to little effect.

The solution was yet another pair of front discs as they said the new discs they had fitted had a manufacturing defect. No idea what and as it was all under their warranty, I have only their word. I assume you don't have loose tyre pressure sensors or ABS sensors.

Yes disc surface was cleaned up prior to installing of new disc, you couldve eaten off it!

It's annoying because my discs were expensive 323mm brembos, I got them from a supplier in germany, check authenticity when they arrived so I'm going to struggle to get another set of discs without paying out, assumed brembo was a reputable brand

The car has been driven very calmy since all discs and pads fitted so they could bed in, including brake cycles!

I guess I could try having the brand new discs skimmed.

Annoyed.

So you had the wobble before the new discs?, if so I’d say a worn suspension joint or bush

Yep, mistook it for 'warped' discs.

Do you think track rod ends? I've had a look at wishbones and they seem very sturdy, but that's when I was led under the car didn't think to look at track rod ends.

No knocking over bumps so ball joints are okay?

Tracking is also out, which I guess would relate to track rod ends?

Sorry, missed the fact that the wobble preceded the new discs. Change TREs if knackered and cross your fingers.

Hi all,

Just to update this thread as I spent many hours trying to google my exact problem and couldn't find alot so hopefully this will help anyone in the future with the same problem.

Went for a spur of the moment wheel balancing, they pointed out one of my front wheels is slightly buckled, 40 grams later and all the shaking is gone!!

It's a different car for sure!!

Now just to get the wheel straightened out and it will be perfect.

Glad it's sorted, very very good cars. My dad had one brand new, I'm looking for one now. Aged extremely well, high quality interior, alot of car for the money. Not my dads but it was exactly like this, hope you enjoy it.

If you are looking at a prospective one, check the brake discs have been changed recently as the 323mm brake discs are quite expensive for a hatchback (side note always go genuine brembo's!) Check cambelt and waterpump have been carried out, other than that they're like any 1.8T vag, only faster and with better brakes and suspension!

My dad also had a red leon albiet a FR 150bhp.



Eta: I don't have any photos of mine yet, even I've owned it 3 months. Otherwise it would be a case of, any excuse to post just moved on a edition 35 gti which was replaced by the cupra r.

Thanks for the tips, the brakes were something I remember being especially good. We had what was at the time the new Cupra as a courtesy car in 2007ish while ours was being serviced, didn't feel too much quicker and apparently felt much softer. Was the 225 not just a FWD S3 that cost less and was quite a bit lighter? I know the S3 had some nicer materials in the interior and had the 4WD whether that's a plus or not is selective I guess. What's the steering like on one?

The brakes are spot on! (Especially as I've just replaced all discs and pads when I didn't need too )

Never driven a mk2 cupra, but have read that is was a flop compared with the mk1 R.

The audi has 'better' materials and Is Haldex, so when the front wheels slip it transfers power to the back so not 'true' 4WD in a sense.

The seats are nicer in the audi (IMO)

The steering is not the last word in handling but it heavy in a good way.

You drive a ST170? In the way of the ford when you fly into corners and you grip the steering and its dull but heavy, basically like that. Couldn't of chosen a better car for comparison actually

Funny you mention it, my dad owned the ST170 I own, he replaced it with the Leon which he liked much much more. If ti steers anything like an ST170 then I can see it being a real option to explore. Sorry for hijacking your thread btw

If you're anything like your dad you will enjoy the cupra R no worries about the hijack, this is exactly what car forums were built for!

Couldn't agree more, I had numerous people telling me (not on here) that it's almost impossible to be balancing or buckled wheel (or both!!) As it only happens when braking, hence the expensive brake change!

Still at least they're new and shiny now
