Hi all
Just wondering about reliability & economy of the 1.8 turbo petrol in the octavia and passat CC of around 2010-2011 age
Any major problems with them? What sort of MPG should I expect? Around a 20 mile commute 75% motorway

Thanks

Quite a few threads on here but to sum it up, timing chain and oil consumption issues.

That's annoying.

Can't go for a different petrol engine (I believe there was a 2.0FSI in a passat) either because insurance goes even higher through the roof.

I've had my A3 1.8T sport for 14 years, touch wood had no major engine problems, it has cambelt etc that needs to be changed every so often but apart from that all I've had in 14 years of ownership is a few split pipes (air), temp sensor. I drive it to London to Manchester a lot in it including this weekend never misses a beat, 35-38mpg.

OP is asking about the later TSI engine. The older 1.8Ts (like yours and mine) are generally pretty good, the newer ones have fairly well documented issues.

Ahh ok, yeah the old ones are good then smile . I had mine MOT'd last week no advisories either in fact its only ever had 1 advisory for a broken rear spring 5 years ago, tough little cars the old A3.

I understand that one major contributor to the unnecessarily-early demise of the excellent, turn-of-the-century 1.8T petrol engine fitted to a multitude of VAG cars is oil starvation due to a pick up pipe blocked with sludge.

Mine has that gunge removed and has done 220,000 miles . . .
