1.8T Octavia/Passat
Discussion
I've had my A3 1.8T sport for 14 years, touch wood had no major engine problems, it has cambelt etc that needs to be changed every so often but apart from that all I've had in 14 years of ownership is a few split pipes (air), temp sensor. I drive it to London to Manchester a lot in it including this weekend never misses a beat, 35-38mpg.

OP is asking about the later TSI engine. The older 1.8Ts (like yours and mine) are generally pretty good, the newer ones have fairly well documented issues.petrolbloke said:

Ahh ok, yeah the old ones are good then . I had mine MOT'd last week no advisories either in fact its only ever had 1 advisory for a broken rear spring 5 years ago, tough little cars the old A3.I understand that one major contributor to the unnecessarily-early demise of the excellent, turn-of-the-century 1.8T petrol engine fitted to a multitude of VAG cars is oil starvation due to a pick up pipe blocked with sludge.
Mine has that gunge removed and has done 220,000 miles . . .
