Just bought a 2012 1.6 tdi golf manual. Last night when driving the car the revs were sitting at 950rpm but they are usually at 800rpm. When I stopped the car and parked it up for the evening the cooling fan came on as soon as I turned off the ignition and remained on for 10 secs before stopping.

I’m new to the world of diesels so I was wondering if this was the diesel particulate regenerating ? There was no loss of power or anything like that.

Sounds about right; they're often slightly smelly when regenerating too.

That’s brilliant thanks for the reply. Yes it did smell a bit funny when I opened the bonnet.

Thanks again

Tip for you if you notice it in future - don't switch off the engine until the idle returns to normal. It'll log in the ECU as an uncompleted regen if you switch off in the process of it doing it, which isn't a problem so long as it managed it at some point before the ash loading becomes critical.

Best thing to do is let it finish smile
