Help - what Is this?

Have a mk4 tdi golf 1.9. Whilst driving this fell into the footwell. Seemed to come from the clutch pedal area but not sure. So far everyone is still working OK. Clutch seems fine. Can anyone tell me what this is?! Clueless!

Looks like a bump stop. Stops the pedal wearing the carpet out.
