So, on the hunt for another car, I’ve looked at a Octavia vrs, and a 3.2 TT.
Chalk and cheese expectedly.

Is all the hype about the unreliability of the DSG really to be believed?

I had an A3 3.2 with DSG (so the same mechanicals as the TT3.2), did 80k+ miles in 12 years and the DSG was still working fine when I sold it although I did have a 3 occasions when it started misbehaving until it eventually stopped shifting, leaving me in neutral.

Each time it was directly after starting with a weak battery (also combined with multiple, unrelated warning lights) and was fine again after a restart.

It was heavy on batteries needing 2 replacements during it's life and the fault only ever occurred if started on a weak battery - as if it didn't 'boot' correctly.

Certainly didn't put me off DSG boxes as I'm a convert. I have another now which has been fine so far although less than 30k miles.

As an aside the only major problem I had with the 3.2 was the timing chain tensioner failure at around 40k, fortunately Audi fixed it (mostly) under warranty even though the car was 4 years old.

A thing to bear in mind is that as with all things, you only hear about it when it goes wrong. We havent got everyone with a perfectly fine DSG posting threads about how not broken it is every day.

Both of those will use the 6 speed wet clutch.

This is one of the more reliable DSGs. Make sure it's serviced on time (every 40k miles) and you should be fine.

I had one for 6 years in a TTS and it never had any issues.

There are plenty of specialists out there now and the price to repair or buy refurb is pretty much the same as a new clutch in a normal gearbox anyway. Its just main dealers that give daft quotes to fully replace the whole unit.

I’ve had two. One in a 2007 A3 2.0TDI 170 and one in a 20-7 A4 2.0TDI 190.

The mechatronics went at 60k in the A3. And 100k it was on the way out again.

The A4 is on 26k with no issues so far.

How much do these cost to repair these days?

I think refurb mechatronic's are up to about £500, which in alot of cases where dealers have quoted £5-10k to replace the whole lot, was all it needed.

Mines been pretty much spot on, ok you can get to a junction and it will balls up occasionally but that’s mainly the stop start
