Hi all,

Looking to swap my 17 golf r for an Audi rs3 because I need that 5 pot in my life!!

There’s 3 options,

1) 2016 model year with 367ps which I can pick up for 33-36k with the spec id like. Insurance PA is £2300 for myself. Stage 1 is around 420bhp, stage 2 around 440bhp. With it being nearly 3 years old, it’s lost most of its depreciation and looking at the 2012 models from yesteryear, it won’t drop much more than that. Tax is before the thresholds came into play. It’s rumoured that the old iron black engine also sounds better than the aluminium one. I’d take the car to stage 2 pretty much immediately.

2) 2017+ for around £44k with the spec id like, which has the new aluminium engine which is 26kg lighter over the front end and 100kg lighter overall as a car, and has 400ps. The engine tunes very well, stage one is circa 500bhp. Insurance is 3k for myself. Tax expensive as over 40k list, around £600 a year. As warranty would still be in tact, I’d not be tuning it for a while.

3) an Audi ttrs mk3. Same as option 2 but 100kg lighter again! More expensive again at 47k. To be fair, for 3k, I’d rather have the ttrs over the rs3. I don’t have a family so practicality isn’t really an issue. Insurance is £1500 for myself. Tax as it’s over 40k list is like £600 a year as well...

Is it worth the 12k swap from my current R? Is it worth getting the new aluminium engine from the facelift after outlining the above?

My advice would be to have a long think about what you're actually trying to achieve with the swap. £12k is a lot of money, and it it really £12k 'more car'? Judging by those insurance numbers I'd guess you're pretty young (or have a drink driving endorsement or something!) and obviously I know nothing about your finances but don't skin yourself for a car, the novelty will ALWAYS wear off faster than the finance agreement!

As you have a Golf R at the moment if I was in your position I'd probably not swap for an RS3, simply because of how similar they are really, dynamically they'll be little between them, and at he end of the day it's an A3 with a serious engine in it. £12k and £3k a year insurance for a bit more performance (that if we're being honest, you can't really explore on the road) is awful steep.

Only you know if it's really worth it though, and it's great having a car you love and enjoying the event of getting to drive it every day. We all do man maths when car buying, just remember to keep your sensible head on a little bit! wink

Tough choice as the PFL RS3 sounds much better than the new FL version but the FL is lighter, has arguably a better looking front end and has a "better" engine albeit new of course so perhaps un-tested in the real world.

I owned a PFL and could not / would not switch up to a FL model as it didn't seem to be different enough to me instead I went RS4. I know a lot of lads with both cars and even people who have gone PFL to FL and the consensus seems to be that the FL is marginally better. It tunes well as you say in the OP with Iroz (in USA) running an otherwise standard car at 700hp ish and not broken it yet!

The TTRS is another level of course, again arguably looks better and goes slightly better given it is lighter.

For me the PFL is the sweetspot as it has an epic engine and nothing this side of a supercar sounds so good if you simply decat the rear pipes. You'd save a fair wedge that way too.

Well the deal is done guys. Px value of £22,250 from the dealer. My golf is also up for sale at a garage (doing a commissioned sale) and hoping I can grab an extra 1-2k from doing so before I go collect. Still have to wait for my v5 docs and my loan to come into my bank so gives it about a week to sell for a bit extra cash.

£2400 as I’m only 24 unfortunately! Had a claim last year (non fault) and it’s rinsed my insurance. Gone go from 700 to £2000 in the golf, so figured I’d rather pay the £400 difference and upgrade.

I have no financial dependants and a relatively well paid job (self employed) so I should have the loan paid off in the next 4 months anyway. It’ll be my last car before I get a place of my own so I figured why the hell not!

Why have you mentioned tuning? Have you looked into insurance figures for a remapped car?
