Hi Guys,
Hoping Ive put this in the right sub but if not, please do move to the correct location.

Ive got an inspection warning on my dash which falls in line with whats in the service book (the 2 year inspection was done 3 months before the 12 months period was up and wasnt even at 20k miles at that point - just throwing that in there if its relevant)

But I'm a little confused as to what needs to happen and thus what I'm actually supposed to be charged/buy and provide myself to avoid huge costs.

Car is at 26k miles, is bought 2nd hand (1 previous owner), is a 16 plate and the 3 year warranty for it ends in may/june.

My question is: If I book this in at a VW garage assuming nothing is broken, what gets checked and what would the likely cost for this 3rd year inspection be?

Ive never owned a new car that is still under manufacturers warranty so apologies if this is bread and butter!

Cheers!

It's just a minor service if it's the third one. Something like £250 for a visual inspection, oil and filter changes etc...

Brake fluid gets changed at 3yr and then every 2yr.

Not sure what the schedule is on the Haldex these days but that oil may be changed at 3yr. Used to be 40k / 4 yrs but not sure what it is on the latest generation.

Not an answer to your cost question but definitely get it booked in to be inspected before the warranty runs out, a friend has one of the same year and recently had a low coolant warning. Turns out there was a thermostat fault and they also found a haldex clutch fault with a total repair bill of £800... luckily covered under the warranty before it ran out.

I'm almost certain Haldex is 30k or 3 years. DSG, if applicable, is 40k

I ‘think’ the new wet 7 speed DSG may be 80k service intervals

Ah right - gotcha - thanks for the replies.
So for clarity - this is something I have to do, but can this be done at any VAT registered garage (even if its still in the Manufacturer warranty)?

I only ask as from what I've understood reading around is that it can be cheaper as long as VW approved parts/products are used.

Yes you can, keep the invoice that proves VW parts were used.

But....

How long are you keeping the car?

Having a service outside of VW will mean no goodwill from VW if you have problems after the warranty expires.

Also, when time comes to sell, most VW garages will only buy cars with FVSH.

Personally I'd pay the extra to keep VW history until the car's at least 5 years old.

Another also, Audi price matched a service on my last TT and that saved me £100

Worth keeping in mind that quite often the dealer reset the 'Inspection' interval just to show that the brake fluid is due when the car is 3-years old. I had this on my TT. So given your cars low mileage it may simply just be due to the brake fluid change then good to go another year before the actual service is due, if that makes sense...

Could this not just be an end of warranty check? My BMW recently just had the same, showed up on the dash as an inspection when i booked it in it was a free end of warranty inspection

The "delivery inspection carried out on:" states 16/5/16 and Ive just confirmed with the company I bought the car from that the 17th of June is when the warranty runs out.

@va1o - yes, I get what you mean - odd that its only 5 months until the actual service and not more in line with a year

Will confirm with the dealer if they serviced it before I bought it from them on Monday to maybe help sort this out.

And yes Trevor - Id be looking to keep the car at least another 3 years (so would make the car 5 years old)
Will phone around to see what other non VW garages quote.

Haldex oil is scheduled to be changed every 3 years and you must get the filter cleaned too. Dealers won't ordinarily do this but they should if you ask, or take it to a good Indie. At just 15,000 miles my Haldex filter was completely clogged up.

Hi,

I would definitely not go outside the main dealer network if the car has a warranty.

You go to a third party garage, they find a fault, you take it to the dealer to fix, dealer says nah it's all fine, you argue with dealer, dealer says our specialists have checked and it's all fine, you go back to the other garage and round and round you go never knowing if the fault is genuine or not.

If you go to a third party the main dealer has a potential get out plus it means taking extra days off work and more stress just to save 100 quid.
