So on saturday whilst driving at about 20 mph, my parking sensor screen came up, all the readouts went nuts, went off again and I lost nav, GPS, carplay, compass, bluetooth, WLAN and probably some other stuff too. Even the little direction indicator on the instrument panel has disappeared (unless I switch the radio off, in which case it comes back but says North permanently!!)

It doesn't even recognise that the bluetooth module is there, I can't even pair or unpair a phone.

Does anyone have any ideas please? Car is 5 months out of warranty. Have done a factory reset and reboot of the unit but its made no difference.

Sadly not. It runs off a built in HDD where the nav data is preloaded from the factory.

Hold down the power button for 10 seconds (hard reset); certainly worth a go.

One of my kids had to take their 7.5 back as it threw up an 'Emergency Update' error on a blue screen of death last week.

Took it in and it turns out there is a software update to solve these issues.

Two fking days they wanted the car to do it FFS!

Very often these software updates take a while to install, they can also require other modules updated alongside to avoid clashes.

Absolutely, but apparently they said it was in case anything needed to be replaced and wasn’t necessarily just a software issue.

All done now apparently.

Well mine was cured with a software update, but my car is out of warranty so it cost me £60. I’m not particularly happy about this because IMO the software should last the life of the car or updates should be provided FOC. If it was a hard part that wears I could understand it, but this seems off to me. Microsoft still provide updates for my Xbox 360 FFS.....

I wonder if it had any updates whilst still under warranty that would have prevented this, or if at its year 3 service the infotainment unit was ignored...

I suppose you could say it’s free from VW - you’re paying for the dealer to do it, same as if you had to take the Xbox to a computer shop.

Customers should be able to download these updates "over the air" as Telsa do.

It's a con and waste of time having to go to a dealer.

Well as it had one when it was in 3 months ago having the DSG service I would suggest not.... Assuming they did it and not just told me they did?!?

My 7.5 software hasn't mysteriously gone out of date in the last 13 months, put it that way...

Edit:. Hang on, isn't dealer work warrantied for 12 months? If you had software 3 months ago this is surely under warranty.

Some things you can - my old Merc had a SatNav firmware update that came on a DVD. But it also needed an update to the Audio Gate Way and only the dealer could do that, and it had to be connected for several hours, so the car has to go onto a hefty charger to keep everything live.

For anything that goes across multiple parts of the car it's easy to imagine cars ending up bricked. It happens even in dealerships.

ETA: It occured to me to Google Tesla bricked - a LOT of hits!

This "updates" thing is very misunderstood. When you take the car for sevice a lot of people think they load all the latest software. They don't. On a routine service they don't even connect the car to a diagnostic machine unless there's some specific reason to do that. If you complain about, for example, rough DSG shifts, they'll look and see if one of the guided fixes is to update the DSG software, and if it, then they'll do it.

It's a big issue on Mercs with the lastest HDD based nav systems as they're supposed to be updated free for 3yrs - but the dealers 'forget' unless specifically asked, or they say they ran out time and ask people to being the car back. It's because it takes ages and they hate tying up workshop space.
