I’m currently considering my next car purchase in October.
I cover 30 k miles a year as I use my car
for business.
At the moment I have a Golf GTD but unless I buy nearly new it’s not possible to order one from the factory any more.
The nearest car I can think of that will offer most of what my current car does would be a Leon FR. My first thought was a Leon Fr in 2.0 diesel guise. However I reckon the 1.5 tdi 150 petrol is probably almost similarly economical to my GTD. There’s some good leasing deals on Leon’s at the moment and the petrol is roughly £60 a month cheaper than the 2.0 diesel .
Any Leon 1.5tsi owners here?
What sort of real world mpg are you getting?

If you want more performance than the 1.5 150 petrol there is also a 184 diesel & a 190 2.0 petrol.
I have a 1.4 150 petrol Leon that is averaging 45mpg & that includes quite a few trips under 10 miles. The later 1.5 150 should be better?

I have the 1.5 petrol dsg in an Arteon and it's averaging around 49mpg. Round town is 35, longer trips are bringing the average up quite a bit.

It's only done 6k so should hopefully improve..

1.5 TSI is a nice enough engine but I wouldn't bother with that for 30k miles a year. I've had a couple on loan and they've averaged around 40mpg compared to the late 40s I got in my old Mk7 GTD. They're nippy around town but don't have the same pulling power as the diesel

The diesel will get a *minimum* of 10mpg more than the petrol engine. Long term average for my 2.0 diesel 150 was 58mpg, motorway journeys were usually into the 60s, best ever over a reasonable distance was 80-odd mpg. I've now got the 1.4 petrol engine, and I'm averaging 48mpg long term, it's possible to get into the mid-50s but I don't often get high 50s mpg over any distance.

Using a fuel calculator, and working on the usual 5p a litre higher price for diesel over petrol, I reckon you'd save a minimum of £500 a year running the diesel.


30000 miles @ 58mpg, £1.32 litre = £3103.88
30000 miles @ 48mpg, £1.27 litre = £3608.46

Given the minimum of 10mpg advantage for the diesel engine, petrol would have to be 10p a litre cheaper to make it worth while (assuming lease costs for the cars are the same).

If running costs were identical, I'd go for the petrol engine, but it's not worth £500 a year more to me.

Whilst opinions will inevitably vary I can say that I did 86k miles in just over 4 years in a MK7 Golf 1.4 TSI ACT DSG 150, in essence the same engine as the 150 1.5. I got a spreadsheet (!) measured 46mpg, a combination of mainly commuting and large work miles, usally sat with ACC at 75.

I test drove it on the same day against a 2.0TDi, and there was no comparison, it was much quieter, much smoother and most of the 80kg less weight was in the nose, not once did I regret the petrol in those 4 years. Yes the diesel will get better mpg but given fuel prices it won't be that much worse.

Interesting. I test drove a Leon 1.5 FR DDG on Sunday. It was nice being in a petrol again. So much more refined and think it handled better than my golf , probably due to less weight over the front wheels.
I did miss the extra grunt though.
On checking the trip compute the long term average on the Leon was 47mpg.
My GTD is showing 48mpg.
Having read some of the scare stories about the stuttering 1.5 TSI though I might get stay with a diesel.........
They don’t do the 184 any more so I’d have to search out a lightly used one or accept the 150 tdi.

I've had multiple 2.0TDI 150 and 184ps VW's and Skoda's. I'd say there's not a huge difference between them sub 75/80MPH. Over 80 the 184 really shines. I do 3,000 miles a month and would certainly go for the TDI if you're doing lots of motorway stuff, the torque deficit is pretty annoying. Even if the TSI was cheaper it's worth the premium for the torque of a TDI.

There's a few brand new Octavia VRS TDI 184 DSG's left in 2WD form...

I'd avoid the 1.5 petrol as theres been reports of ACT playing up when pulling out of junctions due to it not working out if its a 3 cylinder or 4.
Personally I'd go for a Skoda Octavia I'm not a fan of automatics / DSG and it annoys me the VRS only comes in that format unless petrol? but I do believe the 2.0tdi is the engine to have and if it were me I'd choose the 150ps Sportline.
But then I recently had that choice in estates and got a Ford Focus Active X.
