I own a stage 2 7R, the 8R is a weird one, at times I like it and other times I just think it’s horrible. The interior certainly doesn’t agree with me, the front end looks okay but no very aggressive, the side profile doesn’t look right in 5door imo, the rear of the car does look very nice. I think with some tweeking, lowering of car, certainly change of wheels and some sort of splitters all round once companies start releasing them it could look a half decent car. In all honesty I didn’t think much of the 7 and 7.5R when I first saw them too and now I own one lol so who knows, think it’s just one of them that grows on you. It certainly isn’t as bad as the distaster BMWs m135 is....
The Top Gear review seemed pretty good to me.
There are some improvements (notably handling although it's still no Cayman, apparently) over the 7.5, but it doesn't look as good (subjective), sounds as good (probably true) and costs a chunk more money.
I won't be trading my 7.5 Estate in for an 8 (although, to be honest, I don't think I'd buy another VW full-stop).
The Tesla 3 does ask some awkward questions of the £40K hot hatch, but I suspect lease deals on VWs will be a lot better than on Teslas.

I would also look at the Cupra Formentor for the same money . Very different and highly rated in the reviews?
I'm just not sold on the looks, it's in a different sector isn't it? Like the T-Roc / Qashqai / Kuga etc... small family SUV crossover thingy. They also seem to have a fear of colour, you can have any shade of grey or an awful red on the configurator.
Same price though and same underpinnings.

Yes it a different sector to say a hatch ? Its exactly the same size as a golf estate? They also seem to have a fear of colour, you can have any shade of grey or an awful red on the configurator.

Just different if people aren't sold the front of the new golfs looks? Which seems to be the biggest bug bear

It’s an SUV not a hatchback. If I wanted a small suv then I might consider the cupra. But I don’t need one and so the handling compromises etc aren’t necessary for me. I’d take the golf. tedblog said:

Read last post?In reality its only 15mm taller than a standard Golf and 30mm taller than a GTi.....but its a bit wider and longer, and has DCC & 19"s as standard. It's a beefy hatch, not an SUV really.....nor has a big enough boot to be an "estate" in true terms.
Anyway, I am picking mine up in 2/3 weeks, i'll let you know how it handles. From the reviews I can see online, in Sport/Cupra mode, they seem to hug the road really well....
It's 100kg+ over a Golf R, 20PS down and no Torque Vectoring Haldex, so it'll never be as poised or blistering off the mark, but I think (hoping) it'll still be playful enough if/when a B-Road opens up in front of you.....and hopefully still be sat on the driveway in the morning....

A golf R estate isn’t as nice to drive as a hatchback. So if the cupra isn’t as good as the R estate then that’s a shame. Anyway, I am picking mine up in 2/3 weeks, i'll let you know how it handles. From the reviews I can see online, in Sport/Cupra mode, they seem to hug the road really well....

Be interested to see how you get on - thinking maybe the cupra as my next car (currently r estate) - although looking at the boot measurements the cupra boot is smaller than the r estate (7.5 R I have)Anyway, I am picking mine up in 2/3 weeks, i'll let you know how it handles.
