Hi All,

I've been having the following problem with my multitronic ever since I got the car (2005 A4 B7 2.0 TDI): sometimes after starting the car and driving, the gearbox acts kind of "sensitive", meaning it doesn't really want to put higher gears even though I'm barely pressing the gas pedal, it just keeps the revs at around 2000-ish RPM, and if I back off on the gas to the point where I'm barely touching it, that's when it start to slooowly shift into a higher ratio. But as soon as I put my foot down just by a little, it shifts back up again and the engine is revving at 2000+ RPM while I'm almost not even accelerating at all.

Now I figured out 2 ways this can be fixed: one is to do an ignition cycle, then the gearbox behaviour is back to normal. The other method that fixes it on the fly that I normally use, is put it in manual mode, shift into a higher gear and press the accelerator almost all the way down for a split second (while still NOT touching the kickdown switch). After that, I put the lever back in D and the gearbox is behaving normal again. I do this in manual mode so the engine doesn't rev its **** off when I kick the accelerator, but it works in any mode, the point is you have to push the accelerator all the way once, then it is fixed. This is leading me to the thought that this strange behaviour is linked to the throttle signal that the gearbox receives, because it simply feels like it gets a higher throttle signal than what is actually applied, and it keeps the revs high because it anticipates a high power-need scenario, then after you kick the pedal it somehow "calibrates" itself or something. On the other hand, this doesn't seem to be an issue with the accelerator itself, because the acceleration is always the same, so the engine ECU receives a correct throttle pedal signal in all cases.

One other thing that is worth mentioning that this problem either occurs from the point of starting the car, or it doesn't occur at all, it never starts to behave like this while you're already driving. Also it definitely has some link to some kind of temperature, because it only happens at certain temperature scenarios. For example, it never does it on a winter morning cold start, or on a hot summer day morning. It usually happens after driving the car for a short distance and then leaving it for 1-2 hours, or on mornings when the outside temp is between 10-25 degress centigrade.

I am absolutely clueless about what should I look for or try out, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

hello Guys, here I am, the one who bought one of your problematic multitronic Audi`s on Auction.A6 saloon 03 plate 1.9 tdi 140k So after danger experience, when car lost power in fast line on motorway... well manage to get home. Problem with this car is..everything fine when is cold, transmission works without any strange noise. Once it gets warm up, the PRNDS starts flash and after some time transmission stops to work. Got to garage and got these faulty codes - 17106 - transmission output speed sensor G195 no signal
18226 - pressure control valve 2 N216
17090 - transmission range sensor S125 impossible signal
18201 - transmission output speed sensor 2
18165 - supply voltage open circle intermittent
so any suggestion what I could do? Do you think, that new ECU will cure the problem or It`s Gearbox done?

Seems the US judicial system doesn't think much of Audi's multitronic. I was in the market for a 2012+ A6 but will definitely be steering clear of their CVT equipped cars.

Hello Guys,

I'm considering buying facelift Audi A4 B8 2012 at around 90k km ( ~60k miles ) , equipped with 2.0 TDI 143 hp and Multitronic gearbox. Being reading horror stories for the first 2 generations of Multitronic, but not so much for the last generation from 2009 to 2014. Should I expect reliability issues at this relatively low mileage and are the last Multitronic gearbox just as bad as the previous ones? I'm not concerned about the dynamics as I'm a pretty calm driver and I'm not into high speeds. The oil has been changed by the current owner at 60k km and this was checked in the official Audi service.
