The response....

My reply:

Thanks and 1) does Audi think this part should fail so quickly and 2) does Audi not think the part could have been replaced while the fuel rail work was being carried out with just the cost of the part (as the thermostat would have been accessible)?
Thanks

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I've not had an Audi before and like to research these things meticulously before committing, however after talking myself into about 10 different makes/models I keep finding reasons not to make the switch. Audi S4 seems to tick all the right boxes though, so would be interested to hear thoughts from a group of people that have built up knowledge of these from ownership.

From what I understand this particular car doesn't have ADS or the sports diff, although I'm not sure that particularly bothers me. I do about 15k miles/year mixed driving (work with clients so never commute to the same place for more than 2 weeks).

Anything else on this car that would put someone off as a prospective owner? TIA

It's red with chrome trim and standard wheels; not desirable.

Nastiest of the nasty tyres fitted.

Can agree with you there, my thoughts;

Chrome trim - would wrap black eventually.
Wheels & Tyres - I don't mind the wheels but the tyres I would definitely change, never heard of whatever they're wrapped in at the minute! Would go for Continental SC5's or Michelin PS4's.

Other than that it seems a decent price for the age/mileage - but the market isn't huge so it's hard to tell.

There's very few around. Mileage is low, and MOT history looks clean.
It's got B&O, which is a bonus, but those tyres would be putting me off. (At that mileage it's also due DCT oil change shortly, and possibly front discs soon if they haven't been changed yet.)

This (main dealer) one's newer but higher mileage, different set of toys, at the basically the same price. Full years warranty, of course.

I’d take that one!

And just for a different angle, if 5 seats isn't a necessity, and you can manage with 4, then the S5 Sportback is well worth a consideration too, as they do seem to come slightly better specced as standard.
Same space internally as the S4 saloon and a much more practical boot as well.

A bit more cash (£3.5k) gets you a very well specced 3 year newer model https://usedcars.audi.co.uk/usedcar/audi/s5/s5-spo...

That Sportback has very good spec - the diff is unusual to find on them (you can spot it in boot pics as cars without don't have the hump at the back right of the boot)

Might be looking to sell our Sportback fairly soon (2011, exceptional spec, recent annual service and MOT, 66k miles) if a potential change in circumstances means we need to drop to 1 car.....

Have had a B8.5 S5 for about 10 months now and have had the pleasure of the thermostat failure/coolant leak already.

Now, after wasting ages dealing with a crap Audi service centre, it seems I have "severe oil leaks" coming (potentially) from the cam cover, timing chain cover, and aslo somewhere between the engine and gearbox...

Has anyone had anything similar?

The car does consume oil and I can well believe it leaks, however I have now zero trust in this service centre and would like to double check their diagnosis...as the 3rd potential source of leakage is a very expensive one to even diagnose as it requires taking the gearbox off.

Doesn't sound ideal - the thermostat failed on mine at around the usual mileage (50k) but was done under warranty.

Probably best to get a 2nd opinion from an indy garage, unless you're still under warranty? Depends where you are in the country.

They do drink a bit of oil, but shouldn't need more than one top up between services.

I didn't realise there was a hump in the boot. I have the sports diff on mine, but haven't actually noticed it.

Interestingly doesn't help ID it on the S4, The control module most live somewhere else, so it's proper S5 Sportback geekiness!

Me again...

After kicking up a stick with Audi UK, my work is being done under warranty with a £200 excess. Thermostat and various seals apparently. It’s taking 2 days.

Car is 2015 on 24k miles. Shall I extend the warranty at £731?

My main concerns is something gearbox related but have no idea what an independent would charge to rebuild

Decent result. The extended warranty is difficult to call as it's only expensive if you don't need it! I took out the 5-yr warranty from new, (which cost about £800+) , which has just under a year to run. So far haven't needed to call on it.

Maybe worth shopping around other warranty providers?

The thermostat was the only thing we needed doing on a warranty - instrument cluster was replaced with 90% goodwill contribution (LED flickering fault). Otherwise it's been entirely reliable over 6 years of ownership.

Gearboxes are pretty reliable really - only early cars, before the additional oil filter was introduced, seem to suffer any problems and even then it's not universal.

depends whether you can self-insure if you do get an unexpected bill that would be covered by the warranty?

Thanks Guys

Adrian - using the old d2 S8 as an example, it’s funny when people say to ‘watch out for gearbox issues’ when various specialists can rebuild for under £3k. The S4 box is apparently £10k and rebuilds are around £5k - £8k.

I think i’d wish I had a warranty at those figures on the S4 but good to know of the improvements on the B8.5

The improved boxes came along during B8 production - all S5 Sportbacks have them and it's really only 2009-early 2010 S4s that didn't get the improved filtration and oil filter service change. Any early cars that blew their boxes under warranty will have had the later box fitted too.

We had our S5 gearbox serviced a few k early the first time - it's probably going to be due in 6 months or so again. It drives spot on, so no reason to think it's going to self-destruct.

Know what you mean about the D2 box - was always a concern, but I had mine with low enough mileage that preventative oil and filter changes, despite Audi's protestations ref 'sealed for life' meant it was working better when I sold it than when I bought it! A gearbox failure on a decent D2 shouldn't result in its scrappage. With values of early B8s dropping below £10k a wrecked box would probably spell parts donor time, or a 2nd hand box from German ebay!

Different Audi garage just confirmed all 3 timing chain covers leak!
Unfortunately the bottom cover does indeed require the gearbox taking out which is a 13hr job, been quoted £3,500 to fix!
I'm praying the extended warranty will cover this...

Anyone had similar issues with the 3.0T engine?
I'm very surprised that a 9 year old car, which I've owned for 1y, suddenly(ish) sts all of three of its timing pants
