Running Chimp on Gas's recommendation on oil, (top job) V8 filter and magnetic sump plug it will be interesting to see what the magnet picks up, as the filter should catch most metallic debris- not that Im pulling it out yet with only 1700 miles on the fresh oil to find out...

Well here is your answer about the effectiveness of a strong magnet in the sump- sorry about the focus, but the big black blurry bit on the end is a mixture of magnet particles and carbon, Considering I'm running one of the glassfibre filters I,m surprised there was like this at all as Id assume the filter would have caught it, this is abut 5k miles worth.

Pictures speak volumes so see below. These filters came straight out the box

I don't use WIX filters, I have concerns over there quality, notice the small burr that's torn off the thread on the Wix filter? Also look at the quality of the thread itself, not been machined correctly. I have nearly cross threaded a filter using one of these because the threads are so poorly machined. I would not want to put these on anyone's car. This is not just one filter either, most have defects or issues, and VERY poor threads.

The Coopers/fram filters are Great quality, never had an issue, never had burrs and not had issues with fitment, used them for many many years. usually, my go to filter for most things.

The bosch filter is of great quality, excellent threads and just a small amount better than the fram. Again, german quality, no issues with fitment.

Fram or bosch for me, every time.

Never witnessed that with a Wix filter before frown I tend to check stuff like this as I have witnessed bits of card or paper flecks even in premium brand filters before on the inside rolleyes but this is over a very long career of fitting filters daily, I think IIRC that the Bosch filter is manufactured by Mann anyway scratchchin Mann my favored choice of filter and also an OE brand fitted to VAG BMW etc, cant comment on Coopers or Fram I dont use them Borg and Beck/First line have jumped on the filter band wagon too it seems

I agree, Mann and Mahle are reported to be very good quality, however I have read several bad reports about Fram, but admittedly these have been from the US. The issues were around poor anti drainback valves as well as insubstantial filtration media.

I'm glad I have a supply of David Brown's filters (perhaps made by Cummins Fleetguard?) on my shelf.

Been using the David Brown filters for a few years now and noticed how much cleaner the oil stays. Mark - when did you lat change the oil as it looks like years?

Thats a very distorted image- what you have here is a fine grey silt of metal particles mixed with carbon, there is no oil there at all- that's been washed away with carb'. cleaner, and that's whats been left behind. The grey "silt" around the base of the plug is high temp epoxy glue that holds the magnet into the sump plug.

If you go back to the beginning of this post you'll see I also used the David Brown V8 filters for years, I believe I was the first to start using them on a regular basis and introduced them to my TVR friends on this forum. These filters were always a tight fit but when I fitted my SC-Power engine mounts these excellent high capacity filters proved just too long.

So I switched to the Royal Purple 20-253 which is shorter but uses the same synthetic filtration media, fitting it is so much easier than squeezing in the long David Brown V8 filter which sat very close to the chassis even with standard engine mounts, which was always a concern to me.

There are no such clearance issues with the Royal Purple 20-253 making it the safer choice in my opinion, as such its now become my default filter of choice.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/20-253-Royal-Purple-Per...

At £21 a pop It is admittedly very expensive for an oil filter, however, it's filtration and saturation performance is so superior to a normal cellulose filter I now change it every second 5,000 mile oil change. Running this filter for 10,000 miles, especially as I burn low carbon clean burning LPG, does not even come close to pushing it's capabilities.

Obviously renewing this £21 filter every second change effectively costs me £10.50 per 5,000 oil service, with one of the better cellulose filters typically costing £8.00 but needing to be changed every 5,000 miles, I'm comfortable with paying what amounts to just an extra fiver over 10,000 miles for the unparalleled engine protection the synthetic media Royal Purple 20-253 offers.

Features of the excellent Royal Purple 20-253 include:
  • Thick shell material provides extra security against punctures from road debris
  • 100 percent screen-backed synthetic media provides superior filtration, while keeping restriction low
  • Ultra-strength filter housing endures a higher burst strength than conventional filters
  • High performance silicone anti-drainback valve prevents dry starts, even in extreme conditions
  • Extra-heavy duty rubber base gasket ensures a leak-free seal
  • Metal end caps provide a positive seal for filter element assembly
  • Center tube prevents filter element collapse
  • Bypass valve ensures oil flow in situations of excessive filter element flow restriction
I also use the super strong 'Red Body' FilterMag...

And my own (also super strong) neodymium magnet drain plug.

My oil of choice being the excellent quality and great value Penrite HPR15 15w-60 high zinc content fully synthetic from Classic Oils.

Thanks, that is very useful info

The Royal Purple claim is
99% filtration efficiency at as small as 25 microns...
while keeping flow restriction low

The V8Filters claim is
10 µm Efficiency 73%
30 µm Efficiency 100%
Rated Flow 14.27 GPM

So it does seem that they have very similar efficiency

Unfortunately their product catalogue doesn't seem to include Porsche, which is weird because that would be a significant market in the US.

The Cummings fleet guard filter through V8 Filters is proving hard to source, as Dave is still not well, so Im happy to see and equivalent. The local Fleet guard supplier just looked at me blankly when I gave him part numbers for the V8 filter.

Oil wise I've switched to the Penrite HPR10- personally I think the HPR15 is a bit heavy. Interestingly the price of the Valvoline HPR has now gone up hugely for whats a mineral oil, and the Penrite is still very good value for a full synthetic . There have been supply issues in the past , but you can now get it on Ebay easily enough.
