Hi All,

Since owning my Griff I have had a knocking when shutting the drivers door or going over bumps which sounded like the glass hitting metal. I always assumed that the bottom of the frame had worked loose and needed tightening. I always meant to fix it but while it was working I never made it a priority. Silly mistake as the window stopped working in the Pyrenees a couple of weeks ago. When pressing the switch, you can hear the motor working but there is a clicking sound and no window action.

I have just pulled the door trim and door card off and found the following - see pic. It looks like the worm is not located properly and is hitting the window. It looks odd to me as I cant see how the worm would turn when looped as it is currently. Is the worm supposed to run inside the thinnest of the metal mechanism sections?

Assuming it is wrong, I guess that the end that connects to the motor drive has come adrift as the worm was unable to turn.

Any tips on how to address this before I start taking things apart would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Brian

This pic. might help to show what it should look like...........

On my car the tapping noise is caused by the window glass knocking against the rear of the aluminium channel of the bristle holder

Thanks for that Hedgehopper. That is really helpful. Think I need to remove the mechanism to find out why the worm has come out from the channel. Fingers crossed for an easy fix

Hi, The long spiral is not, in fact, a worm. It does NOT rotate. Its function is that of a flexible "Rack" as it driven by a toothed wheel inside the winder motor gearbox and should slide freely within the slotted metal tube.

You should find at the end of the pic that hedgehopper put up, there will be a spongey material that the "worm" slides down. For it to pop out like it has on there I assume you were sending the window up and something has happened like the window twisted in the frame the motor kept pushing the "worm" and with the window wedged the "worm" jumper out of its carriage.

What I would do assuming you can get it to fit straight back in, perhaps use the motor (press window down button) to pull it back into place. Once you have done that I would suggest checking how the window moves up and down, does it twist when moving, (mean the front end dips down and the back dips up or vice versa?) if this is the case then you need to adjust the internal bars holding the window so there is less movement. If there is no movement I would maybe suggest lubing up the runners of the window, fairy liquid works best.

Best of luck

Thanks for all the advice above. Today I pulled the glass, motor and mech from the door. Managed to fix the mech and get it all back into the door relatively trouble free. Windows all working again 👍

The rattle is most likely the guide rubbers in the window channels are worn or missing.
Did you check their condition before you put it all back together?

Hi Steve

All the rubbers were present and in good condition 👍 The rattle was more of a clonk when shutting the door. I am almost certain that it was the worm hitting the window as it does not do it now 👍

Cheers
