Hi

I'm in the midst of stripping down my rear hubs and suspect that the hub assembly should just pull away from the hub without too much trouble? Mine are refusing to part, even when I grip the carrier in the vice, place a socket over the hub's spline end and hit it with a hammer. No budging. Nothing. Am I missing something or should I just be less gentle with my persuasion?

Before I removed the oil seal:

I just don't want to break anything by being gung-ho!

TIA

Lee

That's a press fit into the bearing, you should level it on a press and press it out or hammer away if you don't care about the damage caused, some are tighter than others
I'm doing the same job right now on some front hubs, one of the hubs had been slightly damaged due to hammering it out with a socket rather than pressing it out

Thanks for that; as I am sending the hubs away for 5-stud conversion, I may just send the lot over and get them to push 'em out! hehe

You need a press and tooling correctly sized to the shiny inner ring in you photo.
This will press the hub out of the carrier/bearings. The hub will most likely come out with the inner race of the outer bearing still attached to the shaft. You will either require a bearing puller or careful use of an angle grinder to slit through the race far enough that a chisel can be used to split the race.

You will then need to drift out both of the outer races from the carrier.

Great, thanks Steve. I have asked if Sportmotive will split them for me as I have so many other jobs to do, but if they can't then I know someone with a commercial press, which I may have to borrow.
