Brilliant news Mathew!

Do you think you will be able to use the griff at Snetterton in August or will it be the Fiesta?

If you want to clock up some miles, take a spin to my place and we can have a drool over it on the ramp.......
I will definitely pop up to Snetterton for the track day in August but I have not booked to drive on track. I was about to book then the second Cadwell day came up and couldn't quite stretch to do both so I chose Cadwell.

Popping up for a visit sounds like a good plan. thumbup

I feel the old days coming on,,, feeling nostalgic.
I’m seriously uplifted Matt.
I need to get a grip!
I can’t wait to see this car after it’s all shook down and sorted.
I’ll only see it if I’m in mine so I better crack on.
I’ve talked with the pro about all this in the past and watched Ian do similar, it’s a huge job and getting it right is the only thing that matters. This should rock and the constant updating of engine info on the small screen is great. You can have them flash to alert you if I’m correct.
That’s the one right there on a set up like this.

Fabulous and well worth the wait if it’s running good straight out the box with a tight engine.

ETA
Just to confirm is this still a 5.0 engine or have you gone bigger?
LOL - The good ole days were the best - Lotus Test track.... I do not need to say anymore - hahahaha
Good to hear from you Alun and thank you for your kind words.
The screen is great and will bolt straight on to yours as well. It can be configured how you want and yes it flashes up warnings when levels go beyond the specified parameters.

How are you getting on with yours sir?

Engine is a 5.3 - full details here:

Oh err missus.
Excellent.
I’m well mate.
Mines been ready to go for sometime, I’ve just been concentrating on other things really and trying to get my finances a little more in line with what I’m actually earning biggrin
It’s all a bit frustrating but I have the leg work on the car behind me now so it’s nice knowing it’s almost complete.
I have an electrical gremlin that needs a repair but I’ve been away from home this last two weeks, I’m home today so I’ll be looking into it later.

I might have to bite the bullet and just let Jay at Powers sort it out but we have such a great bunch of friends on here I’m hoping one of us will crack it.
I’d sell my car but for how cheap it is to own and the friends I’ve made.
Can’t drive it with these fuel prices but it’s well sorted just in case.
At the end of the day I whacked nearly 40k miles on the bugger. It’s just having a deserved rest and letting the others catch up while my epoxy mastic paint goes off biggrin
I think 12 months is more than enough time now though,,,,
Excuses excuses,,, it’s time I got going again as today’s weather reminds me.
Mate so this means you can turn the key and go for a ride,,,
It’s been awhile for you too. Well done Matt.

Lord Matthew

Your Rover V8 is a master piece and one of a kind especially with those downdraft ITB which remind me of BMW’s M3 V8 ITBs.

I had to re-read your detailed spec several times to take it all in and as usual your photos are amazing & perfect for zooming in and having a closer look.

48mm Throttle bodies, 12.36 C/R (OMG) & a big cam, should rev high & produce big power. Those YT6305 roller rockers & your one off aftermarket rocker covers look perfect, plus a well tidy installation with a 5 year warranty, you have done well.

“it is very drivable indeed, no issues with rough idle or pulling away at slow speeds”

Very impressive how modern ECUs can ‘tam the beast’ & control the idle with the ignition advance, especially clever during cold start up that normally requires extra idle air. Your ITBs must have a very progressive throttle snail cam, I thought with 8 x 48mm ITB you’d need fly-by-wire for throttle progression during slow speed manoeuvring and to provide extra air for cold start up.

Running in will be the slowest you’ve driven your Griff but will still be entertaining as I bet you’ll still have over 200bhp and over 300lbs/ft to play with up to 3300 rpm.

Is that a vacuum sensor loose on the valley gasket in the “JE low profile inlet test fit” picture, where’s it installed in the final build?

Sorry I could ask you a million questions but I’ll wait until I see it, the ultimate NA Rover V8 !!!

Huge respect Sir and Good Luck

I have just read your build thread Matthew. I sincerely hope that the car gives you as much pleasure as you deserve, after taking so much trouble to get it right. You must have worn your own groove in the road from home to Coventry over the last couple of years. I will continue reading with interest.

Afternoon Steve,

Thank you ever so much for your kind words.

Your response prompted me to go back and look at the build from the start. It sounds crazy but there is some of it I had forgotten! biggrin

I cannot believe it myself that the engine starts on the key with no throttle input required from cold and that it is so drivable at low revs, more so than my 500. Living in Essex I have plenty of experience of stop start in traffic!

It does certainly feel quite fast even limited to 3.3k and you are probably correct must have around 300ft/lb even at those low revs. I have not even got near full throttle as it revs up so quick.

The vacuum is another pleasant surprise. The vacuum for the brakes is taken from a single throttle body. With the high lift cam I assumed that this would not be enough to operate the brakes. I was envisaging being required to install an electronic brake vacuum booster.

Look forward to catching up soon.

Matthew

250 miles completed in the car last week as I have been using the car as a daily. I am pleased to report no issues with the new engine. Still running very well indeed and I am still amazed by the drivability of the car. Car is filthy and needs a wash but great to get back out in it again and get some miles in.

I was hoping to get the miles done on the car fairly quickly but the price of fuel is a bit prohibitive currently. silly

The only shakedown issue so far is the aux belt has started to fray. Looking through the Oracle of TVR knowledge that is PH this is a known issue with the JE alternator bracket I have fitted to mine. I have run a 7PK belt on mine previously for years without any issues but interesting to read JE supplies a 6PK belt due to issues with fraying on the larger belt.

6PK belt is now fitted so will hopefully get some more mines on over the next few weeks. Hopefully this will cure the issue as I am hoping it is not a problem with the alloy pulleys I had made, would be a shame to have to go back to standard as they look fantastic.

Are you running the Davis Craig water pump setup ? If so did you keep the mechanical water pump as well ? What size pump did you opt for ? , just looking to install one

I also see you have oil water cooler, is this a thermostatic bypass loop for warm up, and mounted on the rad outlet ?

Hi Nigel,

Yes Craig David pump - proper bo laugh It is a Davis Craig EWP150 as recommended by TVR Power. Not a lot off room with the CF equal length manifolds but it is nestled away next to the rad. Running both the standard water pump and the EWP as a supplement. In the car's final config the fans and EWP will be setup to run on after ignition is switched off.

Yes oil / water heat exchanger instead of a traditional air oil cooler as it should help bring the oil up to temperature quicker and hopefully maintain it. It is one from a TVR T car so standard TVR part

800 miles completed on the new engine now. Getting close to the magic 1000 running in miles.

The new 6 rib belt seems to be holding for the minute so good news on that front. I now carry a spare and tools just in case! The issue appears to be pulley alignment as the 7 rib belt rubs on the water pump pulley, causing it to fray. The pulleys are new custom made copies of the original steel Rover items so there is small possibility they are out of tolerance, unlikely but they are not proven until I get some more miles in.

The only other issue was a misfire which was caused by a failed spark plug. The MBE screen picked this straight away showing a high lambda level on bank 2.

As a precaution the car went back to Powers Performance for diagnostics. Dom and the team quickly identified an issue with one of the spark plugs and swapped out all 8 plugs and fitted a new lambda sensor on bank 2 just in case it was the lambda that failed which then in turn caused the ECU incorrectly trim and then failed the plug.

I did a 220 mile round trip today to Snetterton to meet some friends. Car performed faultlessly.

There was a lovely 1960s Griffith in attendance it was cocking a front wheel out the corners and lighting up the tyres. Awesome

Car is looking brilliant Mathew. The long wait is almost over.

Great to see you and catch up. Was a brilliant day at Snetterton. Shame you couldn’t put the car through its paces.

I feel a bit upset that you didn’t put a picture of my Skoda up…..laugh
