Somehow I resisted replying to this on Twitter.
It’s almost like they should record, edit and release like every other YouTuber not sit on content for 18 months ….. ah well we’ll never get to see all the dashboard stuff
I doubt they’re storing Binky footage on a PATA drive. The last mainstream drives were made over 20 years ago. Well I hope they’re not…

Is Kickstarter still a thing? I'm starting to feel like I invested time and money into some half baked idea.

I've written much over the last year or so about all the things that have gone wrong with the process. Most boiled down to one or two things that were completely unforeseen and almost undetectable. Every time we fixed an issue, something else went wrong and then we fixed that and the original thing went wrong again.

It was like the universe was against us and unless you were there, there's just no way you would believe it. I can barely believe it myself to be honest.

But to give you an example, this happened just last week...

We've rebuilt the mill twice and upgraded the controllers and power supplies after they failed - you might remember the mains power issue that precipitated those failures - and we've had no issues since then. The centre gauge is made up of no less than five levels and there's some intricate milling to make up what looks exactly like the standard mini fuel/water temp gauge. It's quite the thing...

Anyway, with all the prototyping done except for one piece - for which the gcode had been finalised - the hard drive failed on the PC. Operating system, Mach 3 programme and every single piece of gcode for every single piece of milling we've ever done or was about to do - gone. Just like that, vanished.

If we'd had a pram, or indeed some toys, well, you can imagine... If we'd had any emotion left, well there would have been tears.

The plan was sound - you'd have been watching episode 39 today. As it happens, we just had to drown our sorrows and come up with another plan. So, a slightly different video than envisioned if coming week after next probably and we're going to split the madness of the last eighteen months into probably three videos now.

We're too bloody minded to quit, we're too mentally exhausted to do anything other than just keep plodding on now. The universe and its myriad roadblocks can do one, we're not to be beaten.

See you in a couple of weeks, thanks for your patience as always, you're amazing.

Cheers,

Nik and Richard.

Which, if they can be believed, just shows how amateur they are in the YouTube space.

Is a mill breaking the cause of 18 months of no videos? No, of course not, they're just trying to convince themselves of that. But possibly more relevantly, you'd assume they had the CAD files of the parts they'd need, and given the industry they're in, they absolutely could have got a contact to whip up the required 'last' part. That would get the vid out, like a proper YouTuber would, as they know the video is what's important, not the process.

But they didn't, because it was never about the parts, that's not what's been holding everything up. It's sort of really sad they can't see that or be honest with themselves about it.

What annoys me the most, is the lack of any content on YouTube from BOM!

No Howie, no shorts, not even a car review for ages.

I'm still a patron, but only 2quid a month. I can certainly understand other members frustrations on the higher tiers.

(I signed up to patron with the understanding it would help the boys with Binky progress, not makes the video releases quicker)

I think the problem this surfaces is that they think they have to produce videos of success, whereas most viewers would happily watch videos of failures. It is the people, the journey, the process and the storytelling that sucks people in. But that can be hard to grasp.

As regards hard drives, that’s just amateur hour. Where are the backups? Why is it on spinning rust in the first place? Why is the gcode being developed on the old mill PC? That said, I’m sure there are many ‘shops up and down the country that also run their mills with old PCs featuring ticking-time-bomb internals - so a timely reminder of the necessity of backups and planned maintenance on these old machines.

Well let's see if they actually produce anything in the next couple of weeks, I just can't understand why they couldn't knock together even 15 minutes a month of quick updates, it's at best hugely disorganised, and not really fair on the people subscribing to see their (brilliant when it happens) content...

I might just be overly cynical, but this sounds like another “keep paying the Patreon” ploy.

Despite mother nature's best efforts - flooding at Richard's house and the shed being cut off due to flooding - episode 39 of Project Binky is coming your way next Friday 25th October.

It's the most complicated edit I think we've ever done; there's footage going back a very long time alongside clips we're shooting right now and trying to create something coherent out of this lot is proving bloody difficult.

If you're interested, perhaps you lot would like to see a ridiculously rough cut later this week (won't be complete) and you can tell us if we're anywhere near getting it right? Having been so close to all this for so very long, it's hard to tell what we've covered correctly and what we haven't. Let us know if that sounds okay.

Cheers!

That's... I have no words.

How much a month have they had, on average since the last video, from Patreon? £3k a month? So sixty six thousand pounds after their last video, they're asking other people to check their homework for them?

They've got 430,000 subs, they should know how to make a bloody video. I've no idea why that part has rubbed me up the wrong way so much, but it has! hehe

That was going by their patreon members, it was posted a little while back, although I may not be recalling it right.

Either way, totally dumb and irrational thing to get annoyed at.

I’ll believe it when I see it. I also expect it to be a major let down for 18 months of work.
