R 53 air filter/intake manifold

Hi guys, I am finally getting round to getting on with making my r53 bought 3 months ago into a useable car with track abilities also.
Yesterday I went under the bonnet tom make a start in the engine bay and found the following:-
Underside of the air filter was so black & mucky it is a wonder it was allowing any air through.
Intake ducting & manifold downstream of the breather inlet was completely coated in black oil film.
Are these normal?
I will be removing the front of the car to get the S/C etc out to clean/check/oil/modify the S/C & pulley etc maybe next week so will get it off properly then for a good clean, but it there anything else I should be looking into at that time?
