I am looking to purchase a Mini Cooper s as a fun / fast road car, it will not do a huge amount of mileage, the question is which one to go for, is it worth going for a newer turbo car or an earlier supercharged car. I am quite happy to spend some money on tuning. Thanks for any advise.

I'd go for an R56 turbo with that budget. Better built car, easier and cheaper to tune. Should be be able to pick up a facelift car with the revised engine at the top end of your budget.

Cheap looking car, may be a fun car,

Now is it a fast road car? Depends on interpretation I suppose. I suspect not easier to tune really, unless you are just talking a generic remap, which in contrast to a supercharged car will be night and day, but then the engine will collapse if you try too hard by all accounts.

So it isn't very cheap really. Neither are if you want a decent fast road version.

I found the R56 tempting, but having driven a few, found them 'ok' but numb. Now mine was already altered a little, but I still expected some urgency, but no.

Many cars in either guise exist for a few £k, some cheaply modified which is what they have a rep for in regard bang for buck, others have better maintenance/condition, spec, suspension, brakes, cylinder heads, intercoolers, oil coolers, software, injectors, camshaft/s, bearings, fixings, other internals, differentials, flywheels, gearing perhaps, other specific upgrades, engine mounts, exhausts, manifolds, sensors, tyres, so work out the potential cost to get there and set it up, you'll hopefully be paying more than 7k,

You might wish to decide if you want one style over another, turbo's are strong on torque lower down, supercharged are lag free rev happy and different, turbo is easier to drive comfortably, supercharged you may find more focused, but much of that is personal preference, so you may need to experience it?

From what I've read about the cam chains and the carbon st on the inlet valves on the R56, I'd rather find a nice low mileage facelift R53. They look nicer too.

Or just budget £1,000 to fit a chain kit and have a walnut blast straight away.
Oh and replace the front wishbone bushes (both models), preferably with poly.

R53 or LCI R56 with the N18 engine if it was me.

We've had our R56 N18 for 3 1/2 years. It burns no oil and the only issue has been the High Pressure Fuel Pump, which cost £300 to fit.

As has been said, if you can't get a facelift/LCI R56 in budget then I'd go for an R53 over an early R56, and spend the pennies on tuning.

Worth trying both to see what you think. I've got a modded R53, and a stock LCI R56. The R56 makes a better daily, but just doesn't have the grin factor of the R53. Still a great car, but the R53 is more fun IMO

Bought this last month for less than 7k. 2010 190bhp R55. I absolutely love it. More fun than my golf r but obviously nowhere near as quick.

The revised Clubmans are better looking I think that phase 1. Also come with a decent amount of Chili stuff like dab. Sport button firms up the steering and allows pops when slowing down. Did I mention I think its great fun?

They use a bit of oil apparently other than that the N18 should be stress free. Computer showing 36mpg average (my golf is 26).

Edit to add - if you look at clubmans the rear left barn door rusts at the bottom right - mine is currently being considered to be fixed under manufacturer warranty, worth noting if buying.

having owned a facelift R53 S and the R56 LCI and now an F56S

I can confidently say, if you want a go kart feel and like superchargers def go with the R53

if you want something a bit more fined on the suspension but good pace and good enough brakes go with an R56

if you want to frighten yourself to death and have cash to blow get an F56, it will go fast enough to put a smile on your face but then you'll bite your tongue off trying to STOP!!! lol

wish id got the bloody JCW now grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Dankan Mini ..... thats near me, it is the older N14 engine, for me the extra length in the wheelbase helps cut some of the bouncyness out. I've owned mine over 4 years now which is the longest ever for me, it just beats the 4 years i owned my Leon Cupra for.

As said, that is the N14 engine.

How about this:

It's been for sale for a few weeks.

Looks nice to be fair, but it’s double the one I shared and it’s an auto....

As others have said go for a good R53 or R56 with the N18 engine

Great looking Clubman cool

I ran an R53 as a daily for 10 years and recently bought this Clubman

The biggest different is the noise, the R53 is much more vocal biggrin

i have a Clubman JCW with the N18 engine, fitted a decat and the noise is fantastic now, something worth doing if you do go for the turbo variant

i think if you have the n18 you will have the sport button which turns off the exhaust noise which is welcomed somtimes

Go for the R53, more fun, supercharger and no worry of death rattle on newer turbo engines!
