Hello, I am new to this forum and wanted some feedback on my set up - no reliable rolling road over where I am in Canada;

- 1293
- dishes pistons -AW - 8cc
- 9.5 CR
- chamber - 25cc
- bp255K Cam
- hif44/k&n cone
- red spring - pending install
- currently BDL but will test BCE needle
- Alloy intake
- LCB exhaust
- 1.75 pipe to a 2.0 exhaust
- electronic distributor- disconnected vacuum
- CST2007 sport spec cylinder head 12g940 - 35.7/29.5 - pending install - unleaded fuel
- Calver 1.4.1 rockers - pending install

Thoughts on expected HP and any torque improvements

Currently has

- All the above with following deltas;
- 12g1316 smog head
- small bore rockers - last owner??
- Green spring on HIF44

I was building slowly bits and pieces, cylinder head is the last bit

Would be very interested in feedback

I would ask Calver

I did and in fairness to Keith he can only estimate based on what I tell him the car has. Practical application of the upgrades is the key and with no rolling road on my side was wondering what someone with similar specs achieved. My main goal is torque and HP just as a guide.

Your problem will be that without a rolling road you can't hope to get the best out of that set up so whatever anyone says here is purely academic - do you really mean there is no rolling road in a reasonable distance of where you live?

That aside, well set up I would estimate between 85 and 95 BHP and 'plenty' of torque (something which these long stoke A series are not usually short of)

That is fair... and agree with your thoughts on this being an educated guess.

I am in TORONTO Canada and quality mini experts are hard to find and I don't trust those who claim to be the same ( multiple experiences) - sort of in a tough predicament. Hence the reason I tune and tweak myself and use the bottom of the pants approach to determining how much bang for the buck I got.

Your main issue will be needle type and profile but you just need a RR operator and someone who understand SU's for that.

An A series is really just a small MGB engine so I would not say you need a Mini expert per se, an MG man could sort you I'm sure and it's all made a lot easier with a single HIF44?

Ahhh now you're talking as that absolutely is my next challenge.

So since, bare with me, I will be having bigger intake/exhaust as I detailed above should need a richer needle.

Current setup I have a BDL and works well but did same wet sanding and got it to where I think was optimal. With new set up I ordered a BCE and that will be the starting point.

Any additional thoughts would be welcome.

That makes sense but I think what I'm saying is you're only adjustment (assuming the advance curve is right) is the needle and really the only way to get that right is with a RR and a selection of needles or an operator who is knowledgeable and competent enough to do some re profiling on the fly as it were and start narrowing down a lean needle in increments then testing and re testing.

I think I'm right in saying BDL plus red spring is MG Metro spec so that would be a good start but where you go after that would, I think, only be possible with a RR session.

Reluctantly I have to agree with your logic and skirting around the issue as trying to "trick" myself into thinking I can do it all - lol

Regardless, thx for the feedback and there is one option available and going to call around today and inquire.

P.S. Was thinking BCE and red spring!

Try winsu. It’ll give you a feel for what you’ve got.

Yes sir just purchased and a great tool. Also, bought this the other day (Accelerometer) for HP/Torque/0-60 - not sure if anyone else has had experience;

Tried Winsu and I punched in the numbers and for 87hp, not sure that is realistic as if I can get 75 it is more inline with what I am expecting.

Wow, bolted everything on, adjusted the mixture and acceleration and torque is incredible, specs as follows and guessing around 80-85HP -TBD in spring;

Stage 3 Cylinder Head (CST - Calver Special Tuning) - 35.7 Inlet/29.5 exhaust
BP255 CAM (Piper)
HIF44 - BCE neddle/Red Spring
Maniflow LCB exhaust - 1.75 piping to 2.0 exhaust
2.0 Cat back dual box exhaust pipe (resonator added as too nozy)
KAD quick shifter
Ignitor super Coil
Electronic dizzy (distributor)
Iridium Spark Plugs - GAP set - 0.40

The "BCE" needle/Red spring, seems to work as once I put it all back together, fired up on first turn of ignition and idled well - was a little rich so leaned it out. I have the valve clearance at 0.016 but based on Keiths calculations will adjust to 0.018 for my specs - again any thoughts welcome

Thx and Keith recommended the following to accurately check for fuel flow;
