Hi all.

Looking for a bit of guidance folks.

We recently got a 2000 Mini MPi but have realised there is an occasional crunch changing from 3rd to 2nd. Online search tells me this is a known issue.

Can anyone tell me a rough idea of how much fixing this is likely to cost to fix? I appreciate this is quite a big job - engine out. Work would probably be done my a Mini specialist.

Thanks in advance.

Hi David, what part of the country are you in....? There are some really good specialists dotted around that are worth talking to about this, I use Southam Mini & Metro Centre in Warwickshire if it helps, I've been using them for thirty years and they really know their stuff. There's also Guessworks (John Guess is a gearbox guru) in Rugby, Minibits in Northampton and Paul Preston near Market Harborough.

Hi P5BNij.

We're in Edinburgh, so quite far away, but thanks for the information.

We've spoken with a local Mini specialist who has a good reputation for his work and honesty. Really just looking for anyone who has had this done to get a guide on the price.

Thanks.

Perhaps the expense (and continued wear on the gearbox) can be avoided, even at this stage, by successful rev-matching (or even double-declutching) on downward gear changes?

Had this done on a mini we owned back in 2012. It’s a big job and, for ours, involved taking the engine out. Was about £900 back then using a local specialist.

Just make sure it's not worn components in the clutch train - ovalised clutch pedal pivot hole, clevis pin, clutch lever, ball end and the like - these can accumulate and result in graunching on downchanges.

Worth checking in any event before considering engine out job.

Yes, Simon. Had a couple of good chats with him and he's already done a small job on the car.

We were a bit surprised how many cars he's got tucked away in the garage.

Cheers.

Good stuff - his reputation spreads far and wide and he has a knack of finding some great cars. Best of luck with your car wink
