I had a mini as my first (and only at the time) car in 2011, I still have it and I'll never sell it and it is priceless to me. I'm mechanically minded but had no experience at that point.

It lasted about 3 years of Scottish winters and came off the road, I bought a Honda, I bought a E46, the mini was moth balled. Since then I've gained the experience I need to restore the mini (and I'm no longer a student) and it's being transported from my parents garage to me this month for a nut and bolt rebuilt. I've estimated the cost in panels alone at over £2500. Total estimate is more like £20k.

It's never a logical choice to buy a mini. It's like buying art, don't buy a piece of art unless you need it because then the cost is irrelevant. And I don't just mean financial costs.

If I was doing it again, I'd run it as a 3 season daily and swap into something disposable for the winter. Which is what I do now with all my cars. Buy your self a K11 Micra. It's the cheapest mini analogue I've driven, light, British made, rust prone. Lower the rolly polly suspension and it's quite fun.
