New Mini owner here, always wanted one and ended up getting a 99 John Cooper LE, so thought I would introduce myself to fellow mini owners and also ask 2 questions!

My mini shows paint code WEF on the vin plate, according to Rover system this is Brooklands Green with Old English white roof. However ive tried 2 different paint suppliers and brooklands green appears to be metallic but my Mini is a flat dark green (Id say darker than British racing green), does anyone know a good paint supplier for older cars? It appears you could get Audis in brooklands green! Is this the same?

Secondly any tips for filling up with petrol, I knew that pumps clicked off due to the small tank which is an aged old mini usse but at my local shell garage I cant get any petrol in at all!

As you say, your code of WEF is a combination of NNX and HYF

NNX = Old English White
HYF = Brooklands Green

But if your paint is not a metallic I'm afraid all I can suggest is looking at all the "H" (green) codes and hope you find a match.

Here's the most complete paint code list I could find. ( Google is your friend smile )

That's some list but (!).... Antelope was available from 1970 on the early Mk3s and you've missed out Surf Blue, Island Blue, Maroon 'B', Snowberry White, El Paso Beige and Sandy Beige wink

Ha! A lot of the old BMC codes had numbers as well as letters, but a few of them changed without any apparent rhyme or reason wink

Nice Cooper by the way.

The Brooklands green for the John Cooper LE is definitely NON -METALLIC and has code HYF with Old English white roof panel NNX. No Cooper side decals and no side coachline. There were originally 300 LE cars made but John Cooper's Wife wanted one, so 301 was the eventual total. I broke a 1999 LE with only 5000 miles on (it had to be broken up as the damage dictated it). I built all of the parts into a Clubman Estate Shell and still use it regularly. The only part showing any rust 20 years on is the drivers door skin at the bottom and that is the only panel which came from the LE! The Rover cavity wax has 'bridged' the corner between the outer skin and the bottom - applied to cold surfaces allowing moisture to do its worst. The passengers door is from a much earlier car and is still perfect.
You have a rare car there,
Ian

P5BNij - Thank you wink
and yes, I knew a little about the BMC/ Leyland code minefield. When I first got my car I knew it was called Almond Green.
The guy at the paint factors then explained why I had to be a bit more precise than that, so that's how I came to find that list above.

I know, from lurking on here for a while, that you have quite an extensive knowledge of all thing Mini.
Has anyone ever tried to compile a complete list of codes ?

Orcadian - Nice info on the LE
So the OP must have the correct code but, like me, has not realised there are 3 different Brooklands Green's
HYF Brooklands Green 1997-2000
HAE Brooklands Green 1975-1982
HMM Brooklands Green 1975-1982

There are people on here with far more knowledge than me, but I’m on my sixteenth Mini having bought another Mk2 Cooper last week and they tend to get under your skin ‘a bit’!

Almond Green is a nice colour choice, even more so with a contrasting Old English White roof, a nice variation on this is to have a Dove Grey roof instead, I saw a very early Mk1 Cooper like this at a show many years ago and thought it looked fantastic.

I’ve upset one or two purists by painting my Mk2 S dark metallic purple but it’s just the sort of thing people did with Minis in the ‘70s... wink

PS : there’s a list of codes in Lindsay Porter’s Mini restoration book which you can find on eBay, it was published in the ‘80s though so only goes so far.

First off its a 23 year old mini, what realistic chance is there that it has anything like the original paint. Even if original it will have faded over the years

Best bet is to take it along to a decent local car paint supplier and get them to match it, they will know doubt find the code if it is a standard colour. I have always done this with old cars.

Thanks for the info, ill try a local paintshop. My fueling issues are now assumed to be faulty sender unit in the tank. When the gauges shows empty the tank is still 2/3rds full, the general consensus is that all minis have innacurate fuel gauges?

Yes they get under your skin, ive had so many nice comments and people waving at me, already thinking of getting another (preferably a van, older model with carbs!).

Built late '99 but not registered 'till 2000, my car has the same issue as yours regarding the fuel gauge.
Also, does your temperature gauge never go much above half way no matter how hot it is ?
On mine you can hear the radiator fan cut in but the gauge never ever goes up near the red mark.

While looking for answers I found this,

https://www.theminiforum.co.uk/forums/topic/146533...

It was posted back in 2010 and I've not tried it as Maplins shut years ago and I don't know how to get the right part from another source.
But it might save you the trouble of changing the sender when that is possibly not the problem.

Sorry for late reply, been away to Niece's wedding.

I connected the sender wire to the earth and the gauge climbed all the way to the top, but Ive heard if both the fuel gauge and temp gauges are acting up its due to the voltage regulator in the cluster. My coolant temp gauge never goes above half way and ive only heard the fan come on when idling in traffic. My oil gauge got up to 150 a few times in the summer which is quite alarming as ive had a few different performance cars/done track days with other cars and never had oil go as hot as that! Since flushing coolant and oil it stays around 120 now but the weather is cooler.

OK, it seems you've come to the same conclusion as me, it's not a faulty sender but a poor voltage regulator.
So you've saved yourself a few bob and load of hassle changing the sender smile
I haven't replaced my regulator yet as I'm unsure of what would now be the correct part.
I wonder if some kind person on here could have a look at that link I posted and let us know ?

If your oil temp gauge works it would appear that you are one of the fortunate ones, I've heard that many do not !
I think I read somewhere that this is a poor design and the sensor does not protrude into the oilway far enough to get a proper reading.
Mine does work but it takes an age and a good hard run to register anything.

One other thing, how accurate is your speedo ? Mine is out by quite a margin, the faster I go the more it over reads.
I suspect that those cheapskates at Rover just ignored the changes to the gear ratios and final drive and just used the old spec speedo cable.
My work around was to fit a cigarette lighter / 12v supply where the choke cable used to be in the older cars.
Means I can use my sat nav to get an accurate speed reading.

That’s a great idea putting the 12v socket there, a previous owner fitted one but it’s on a bracket under the glovebox. I’m missing a front fog light switch but have them fitted so will try and get a 5 switch panel and move the socket there at same time. Does your fuel gauge go to top if you connect the sender wire to earth?

Yes it does. Tried this when I first got the car, blimey, just checked, that was 14 years ago !! Spent ages messing about with the sender in the tank too.
It was while searching the web that I came across that info from The Mini Forum and realised that the voltage regulator was a known common fault.
I've lived with it for so long now I'll probably never get round to sorting it.

If you do get a 5 switch panel you'll find that it's a right faff to fit the 12v supply where I have.
If I remember correctly, there are 2 studs and nuts that hold the panel in place and the one on the left is right where you want to mount the supply. Or maybe it was just in the way when you put it all back together.?
Anyway, I cut this off and drilled the corect size hole in the panel, then used the large nut at the back of the supply to hold everything in place.
I like that it looks "factory fitted" sitting there smile

By the way, what else could you buy for £11,280 late 1999 early 2000 ?

This might be of some help, now my mini is off road over winter I took the fuel sender out of the tank while the petrol was very low. I noticed that the wiper arm that runs along the resister track inside the fuel sender was not properly aligned so it would of always been under-reading. I managed to re-align it with a screwdriver so the top and bottom of the float travel aligned perfectly in relation to the track and its working fine now, I havnt put any petrol in but when I move the float the gauge now shows correct reading. When I refitted it I made sure the seal was in good condition and the float was able to move freely. smile
