Mine is a factory 3.5. The 3.9 is quite a lot more powerful, which comes from a combination of compression ratio, cam and the induction/exhaust.
The bus can now pull fifth easily, which for an overdrive gear helps the abysmal fuel consumption somewhat. I don’t have any power figures but I did read on here that BDR needles will help.
I have acquired a 3.9 to start rebuilding, so I’m not going to tune the current engine any further. It’ll come out and stay with it for originality.

BDR needles in SU carburetters are a good compromise between economy (!) and torque. The bus can now pull fifth easily, which for an overdrive gear helps the abysmal fuel consumption somewhat. I don’t have any power figures but I did read on here that BDR needles will help.
BAK needles are too lean; BBC needles are great but really dent fuel economy.

New pipes - Twin port manifolds and a 2 1/4” system.
That's interesting - where did you get that system from? The bus can now pull fifth easily, which for an overdrive gear helps the abysmal fuel consumption somewhat. I don’t have any power figures but I did read on here that BDR needles will help.

I've fitted an ex-Disco 3.9i into mine now, using the original headers with the cats still in. I built the exhaust out of 2.5" Jetex parts, resulting in needing to have a side exit in the wing behind the OSR wheel simply because I couldn't get the bends tight enough to route it anywhere else. Without checking, I think the siamese on my headers is further to the left (nearside) than yours looks, and the flanges may be a different config, but would be good to look at other options.
The inspiration from my self-build exhaust came from some pics which 100SRV sent me of the underside of his Bowler. I had to put it together myself because I had no way of getting the Landie to an exhaust builder with no exhaust present!
Think the 2.25 3MB engine in mine will gain a ACR exhaust manifold, and Hi Torque camshaft.
Won’t make a huge difference but with the SU carb that’s fitted and the Accuspark electric ignition, it should make it a bit more lively.
Won’t sound like a V8 but it will match the fuel economy of one...
I’ll change the cylinder head at a much later date.

Picked up my new SVA on Thursday and have already put 1000 miles on it. Great car and very powerful.
Got some nice 20" wheels to replace the hideous 22"s and have put some proper tyres on too. The ride is much better. They also do a decent job of hiding the red calipers. Unfortunately they couldn't quite hide all the weeds on my driveway.

That's what I'm after - hopefully with the bigger manifolds I'll get a sensible resultBreadvan72 said:
You grown ups are talking v8s.
Grown-up not a chance. Even after two years of ownership, I still blip the throttle needlessly, at any opportunity CAPP0 said:

At the risk of over simplifying, it's a RRC downpipe & Y-pipe (disco one takes it too far to one side) into a TD5 system. I still need to fit another hanger for the middle box. Also, I did need a D1 V8 crossmember as the 90 V8 one was too obstructive.Have you got a build thread anywhere for yours?

He has a lot to answer for..... it was something he posted a while ago that kicked off my whole project. CAPP0 said:

Thanks, that makes sense, might have been an option for me if I'd known about it at the time. It's OK as is but the centre silencer has a weird high-frequency buzz to it when you accelerate, at least, that's what I think it is, it's 100% throttle-generated but you can feel it through the seat box. I might try attaching a heavy lump of something to see whether there's any harmonic damping effect. Or, build a system like yours!Have you got a build thread anywhere for yours?
Sadly no build thread; most of the time that I spent working on it, I was far too busy either grunting, or swearing, or both, to be taking pictures!
I also swapped the crossmember for a D1 type, the D1 headers (of course) fit around that, with the greater offset you mention. There's no way that the larger headers will fit around the straight Defender V8 item. Someone asked about that on here a little while back for their own build.
I'll stop now otherwise this will turn into a "what's your next task?/how do I fix this?" thread

This is my new toy a 30th birthday present to myself.
I’ve wanted a Range Rover for years.
I’ve been lucky enough to have driven a few Classics,P38 and Vogue, Supercharged but always had to hand the keys back. I’ve known of this car since the first owner bought it new and would quite often see it out and about local to me. Not showroom condition but I’m working on it but for the time being I’m ordering parts and learning as I go. Picture shows my wife testing it and approving!
