Oh he did a superb job on it and I’ll never claim otherwise.

I’m just still stunned at how much the values have grown over the last couple of years.
Especially given how a few mates have 90s and none paid over 6k for them. Even with a galvanised chassis under one of them.

If he’s wanting a project, I’ve a D3 that’s still waiting its turn.
I really need a larger garage and a lift to sort the bits I can do.

I too was surprised I ended up that level for it. Prices have recently dropped, a full rebuild like this a year ago was as much as £20k.

There are ones similar to mine with a galv underneath for as low as £12k. I think I just ran into the right buyer at the right time.

Still waiting for the right project to come along. It’s not a D3 though, I daily a D4 and so it’s not ‘different enough’ for me. biggrin

Spotted one or two ‘Suffix’ classics on eBay lately that are being sold as for restoration. Usual body rot and the chassis will need blasting, repairing and painting.

They seem to be fetching close to £10k. I’d love to take one on, but seems like I just can’t afford the rebuild with the remaining £6/7k from the defender sale.

I know that at the end it’ll have a much higher value but I’m trying to not dip into other cash for sure! Might have to be a 4 door or a longer build so I can drop some more money in at the end.

Here’s a question. Assuming chassis is repairable (and doesn’t need replacing), how far can I get on £7k before I have to stop and wait?

Assuming body is off, that’s £4k for a proper respray? £1k to blast/ paint the chassis/ refurb the axles. £1k on suspension and £1k to get the engine overhauled (if needed).

So after that it’s just brakes, interior and misc.

Reckon it’s doable?

If budget is tight, perhap forget the respray and make it usuable and reliable first.
It's so easy to remove panels and spray them at some point in the future.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about painting it.
Get the car running and bodywork solid.

Then enjoy it as is for a while.
Then you can make a decision in the future about colour ( Tasmin blue. You know it make sense hehe )

I’ve certainly seen some rollered. In fact, with some practice a roller and tip off can get a nice finish. But I’m not sure I’d be up for it. Even spraying mine, above, the biggest lesson is that paying a professional with a booth and the “technique” is well worth it. I generally do the filling and fairing myself, but the actual paint. I really struggle to do a job I’m proud of.

Seeing as we’re on page 130 of this thread, I found a new Defender 130 to park my 20 year old 110 next to.

Had a rare day off so threw some clean water at 2 of the trio.

Freelander continues to lap up the miles with no concern.
It’s going to Skye in April so going to get some proper cleaning kit as the paint needs a clay and decontamination.

Disco had to get jump started but I left it running while sorting the freeby and it idled happily for 2 hours before washing it.
Have a nice long list to throw at it.
Mechanical side is getting taken care of by Scotland’s best discovery specialist.
Bodywork and paint is getting sorted by engine 710.

Wallet remains terrified at the bill… hehe

Pioneer enjoy your Defender. Ours has been fantastic. It’s not as luxurious as a Range Rover but has the perfect combination of ruggedness and comfort.

Just done the Marshall BT speaker install on the Defender. Followed the linked description and the whole thing was pretty satisfying / easy:
