How difficult was it to get a decent piano finish? I was only looking at that option for another car this week, googling it suggests it's a complete ballache?

Personally I'm not keen on piano black, but it does look like a good job & I can't think of a way you could have got a better looking wood finish.

Dunk,
Have you replaced the gear selector film - the bit with the letters/numbers on it? That looks almost new and I need to replace mine as its decidedly tatty.

hi, new to the forum but working on my classic range rover and wondered if anyone has found good places for parts etc as I am being told that rubbers/seals roof linings are discontinued? Cheers

also I have a big clunk going in to reverse and also occasionally when the car shifts from 2nd to 3rd. I know that you should come off the breaks into neutral and then go into reverse but wondered if anyone had an experience of this/rectified it? Thanks

Apart from putting a few miles on the new engine I've not done a lot to it other
than getting a new windscreen fitted and fixing the drivers door lock which was down
to a tired spring

I used Nationwide to do the screen, Autoglass were ****** useless !!

A big thanks to Phil at Twenty Ten for having it at his place and giving advice to
the screen fitters.
The rear diff has a small leak on the nose seal so he's going to replace that for me while its there

To do the windscreen the bonnet and scuttle/deck panel need to come off if you intend to
use the heated screen plugs, you could cheat and cut the wires but I wasn't having that
as that's just a lazy bodge.

I was very impressed with the condition of the frame that the screen is bonded to, just one small area of surface corrosion on the drivers side bottom corner which was easily dealt with

Wow it looks beautiful. Yesterday I dragged my dads Range Rover out of the barn it had been dumped in the past 6 months in order to get it back on the road. It will be no where near as nice as yours but hopefully it will be reasonable. It was a VM diesel with a manual box but was changed 20 years ago at great expense to a 3.5 Turbo diesel Mazda SLTi and auto box the bill was almost £15,000
!
I had one of these about 20 years ago too.The 3 1/2 litre 4 pot Mazda pulled a trailer as well as a modern 4x4,mine had the manual 5 speed box. I went to Edinburgh from Chelmsford to collect a XK120 and it returned 32 mpg, which in the days of the 3.9 V8 was unheard of,the only trouble was the starter motor, which cost £300 from the people who did the conversion something engineering in Cambridge a small fortune back in the day.I also uprated the front coils as the front end used to tuck under when cornering, this must of been bad as they all handled like a boats.

Great project Dunk. I've got a couple of questions if you don't mind.

The window waist seals, were they replaced with new landrover parts? I've been looking for these for my own classics and the dealers tell me they're out of production.

Did you do any other modernising updates (besides led lights etc) with the strip and rebuild?

Also what rubber did you put around those rims?

Managed to find a couple of good used ones for mine (1986 3.5EFi). Might get lucky if you go to one of the LR shows.
Originals come up as obsolete & no longer available. Some ads show them but list NLA & the price shown is eyewatering:

The last two door ones went out at over £250 each!

However, all the rubber work for 2 and 4 doors is on the list of parts to be remanufactured by JLR Heritage over the next year or two. Along with various seat fabrics and other very elusive but key parts for any sound restoration.

My apologies for the very late reply

My window waist seals are all original, only a few mods have been done, we made a custom heat shield to fit onto
the exhaust centre box, heat wrapped both cats, the leds in the interior lights and leds in the auto shift light indicators, Wipac crystal headlights with upgraded bulbs, polybushes, galvanized chassis which was then sprayed with 3M body shutz coating

The tyres are Pirelli Scorpions

Been sorting out the heated windscreen after the original got a crack in it

Good luck to anyone with a softdash bonded screen that has to do this, my farce started in August 2016 going down the insurance route.

Info for anyone interested or needs to do it, If you use anyone that's not worked on the classic softdash good luck you'll need it

Autoglass can't get the parts but Nationwides approved fitters could but did a rather poor job hence its now
got to come out and be refiited

You can get a screen from Pilkington glass, £250 + vat + £25 delivery, you can at the moment get the 4 trim pieces from LR, these are Disco 1 parts, you can also get pattern trim parts but beware, the lower trim piece that was fitted to my RR is not well made and is deformed where its been cut to fit round the heated screen connection wires
