Take TD5 90 SW to France with kids in side mounted seats?

Morning all,
Despite having a perfectly comfortable family car, I have a yearning to take my Defender on holiday, however am not sure if travelling 300 miles in one hit with kids (7ys and 5yrs)in the rear station wagon seats is advisable. Has anyone any experience or advice? I intend to sit them in their bucket seats (children's car seats) mounted opposite each other directly behind the driver and passenger seats to give maximum frontal impact protection and reduce lateral movement, it also makes it easier to remove whatever weapons they can fashion to hit each other with out of their hands... Any and all advice much appreciated.

Using child seats sideways when they've been specifically designed to work in a forward-aft configuration is lunacy.
Whilst a head on collision might cause some c-spine trauma if using a correctly orientated seat (greatly reduced if rear-facing btw), the same collision experienced in the same seat but sideways would turn the shoulder straps in to a cutting edge straight in to the neck and the major blood vessels therein.
Other than that, a long journey in a Defender is not for the feint hearted.
I did the Alps and back in mine one Christmas. It was ok on my own but with kids.....forget it.

In the U.K. This is illegal. You can't use child seats in side facing seats. If there are no belts on the seats, the they could legally sit in them. But not if there are belts fitted. Don't know the law in France but it may be different.

Every one a winner there. I had considered this, but discounted it on "adventure" grounds, however in light of common sense apparently having won the day, I think this is the best plan.
