Seriously interested in changing SWMBO's Mini Countryman for a later used Evoque. Fantastic looking bit of kit but the more I research reliability issues the more problems I seem to uncover. It's not uncommon to lose perspective in these matters because people are more inclined to register their dissatisfaction with cars than they are to write and say they are relatively/completely satisfied with their ownership experience. Decision is not helped by the fact that for 5 years since new, the Countryman has never had a recall or let us own other than an issue with the windscreen washers which was eventually resolved. For this reason we may go for an X3 or Q5, and even though neither looks as good as Evoque we can't be doing with unreliability issues as the car is frequently used for trips abroad.
Any thoughts or comments would be really appreciated. (Anyone got a good one they want to sell 😉)
Cheers
Steve

Hi, We have had a 2014 2.2 SD4 auto Evoque from nearly new put 51,000 on it thus far, lots of towing up to the max weight quite a bit of off road work (within reason) and lots of rural lanes etc + fast trips on the motorways, never let me down needed a front driveshaft seal at service once but apart from that nothing has broken.

Great car, fast enough handles well for what it is (dynamic spec with adaptive suspension) only downsides, 32mpg average but then given it gets properly used its not to bad, boot is only just enough for a 4 up weekend and finally sometimes people are silly about the 'image' but then that's people for you!

We have an extended LR warranty for £60 a month just to cover anything for peace of mind + LR servicing expensive but keeps warranty so worth it.

Overall cant recommend it enough, we are only changing ours for a disco sport shortly as need more room + towing capacity, would keep it for another 50k otherwise.

Hope this helps smile

We’ve had a 15 reg 190 sd4 2.2 pure tech auto from new, now at 27k miles. I’ll regret saying this but all it has need so far is a new headlight bulb and a wiper blade.
It drives well for the weight, certainly quick enough, and the wife loves it as she suffers with a bad back, the higher seating position really helps. It’s not really big enough for our needs when it comes to airport trips, but the rest of the time it is big enough. Averages ~34mpg although it doesn’t do a lot of long journeys so that’s not bad IMHO. I’d happily change it for an a4 avant, but she says she would replace it for the same car when it’s time to change. That pretty much sums it up......

we have had a 2014 Dynamic for about a month (replacing a 3 Series BMW) and although I was concerned about reliability - the test drive had me hooked

The car is superb - my other car is a DB9 and I have hardly used it since the Evoque turned up!

Boot space isn't huge but we managed to get a full sized suitcase and 3 cabin bags in the back

MPG is about 33 so not stellar

Ride comfort is great making long journeys a breeze

In January 2014 I purchased a brand new Evoque SD4 2.2 Auto Dynamic Lux for my wife for her birthday.

All was well until the first service when on return the car Kangaroo-ed through the gears like a lesson 1 learner driver. The car went back and I was told it was my wife's driving style. Then I was told it was a software update, and the car would 'learn' her driving style. Eventually my local dealer graciously admitted it was a gearbox issue that was replaced under warranty. The car still drove terribly after the new gearbox was fitted.

On top of that, the DVD screen went blank (intermittently) the rear parking sensors worked intermittently (did your wife hit something when reversing, we think there's a scuff on the bumper) one of the door locks failed. I didn't dare attempt the auto-park function - can you imagine the reliability of that?

In the end I got customer services involved and said I wanted to get rid of it. I was low-balled a px offer against a new Evoque. I ended up selling it to an independent dealer (i explained about the gearbox replacement, and he drove it before he purchased it) and replaced it with a 2012 RRS 3.0 SDV6 Lux. Funny thing is, despite their reliability issues this car hasn't put a foot wrong (oh, except when my LR dealer serviced it and caused an air-lock when they changed the fuel filter and they phoned me to say the could't start it!!)

So i'd say avoid, avoid, avoid an Evoque....but maybe I was unlucky!

Maybe my wife was unlucky too, hers was a nightmare! Locks failing, radio packed up, touchscreen crashing regularly, no heated seats, no heater controls, the list goes on. All faults were eventually fixed under warranty but LR’s customer service was appalling. She’s got rid of it now and got a BMW, she’s over the moon with that but at the end of the day, her current car works!

And the stop / start would regularly decide not to re-start the engine, which is a touch inconvenient when you are at traffic lights with a queue behind you!

LOL You've just reminded me that the stop-start would never work in Mrs B's one...yet the courtesy car always worked. I was told the battery was under-spec'd. It felt like the technology was behind the competition. I remember being lucky enough to have a company 1-series in 2007 and the stop-start on that worked just fine.

Buy from a main dealer, they offer 28 day/1000mile no qibble exchange. Make sure you find out where the car has come from (fm LR, private, part ex etc.,) get service history/notes etc. Ask for print out. Buy and enjoy.

Same on my wife's 12 plate although it was more a case of never wanting to switch the engine off. Went in a couple of times for it but was never sorted. Her new one has been fine.

Wife's car (2017 Dynamic Automatic) is currently up for sale have sent you a PM. No real issues to report on hers. Its the new MY17 model with the updated infotainment system and lights/bumpers etc. Only issues were squeaky brakes and a faulty passenger door module - both replaced under warranty. The upgrades are certainly worth it as I think the suspension was upgraded too so the car drove much better than the MY16 we tested and the new infotainment system is pretty good too (much better than the older version).

We've had a 2016 SE Tech for two years. Nothing has gone wrong. Only 'complaint' is Infotainment system and satnav is poor (low res screen, infantile UI).

It's a terrific drive - commanding position, seamless gear changes, enough power for real world motoring.

However when the PCP is up in a year I am never going to buy another JLR product.

Nothing to do with reliability and enjoyment of the Ewok. Just diabolical JLR customer service.

When a flimsy snap-in plastic door speaker cover cracked (my fault) they insisted I would have to spend nearly £1,000 parts labour and VAT on an entire new door card. I bought a 95% identical cover on ebay for £5.

A colleague lost the use of his 2yr-old RR Sport for six weeks while a JLR dealer not a million miles from Park Royal tried to figure out why the engine kept leaking oil. One reason it took so long was that they were backed up with cars requiring warranty attention.

A pity that the quality control and customer service is so ste. Because they are brilliant vehicles when they go well!
