We currently have a C7 RS6 and a Countryman. Which are both great, however we simply do not have the need for 2 cars. In efforts to be more sensible we'd like to move to a 1 car family (Family = me, my wife, 1 yr old and a cocker spaniel). I've been looking for the ideal 1 car. We need a large boot for buggy, dog and holidays, want lots of comfort and a higher door line for putting the little one in and out. My wife feels more comfortable driving a smaller car and has a history of damaging wheels and 4 corners of our larger cars. (A front wing on an RS6 is beyond expensive). In addition although a Euro 6 diesel is currently exempt from all this noise i'm aware the way the wind is blowing.

So....with all that in mind is the hottest Disco sport perfect for us? Reasonable poke, smaller SUV, large boot 981 litres, tarted up well compared to base models, lots of kit and with current discounts it's not, in my view, expensive. Any reason to think otherwise?

p.s. I like the Disco 5 but its huge for my wife to drive, probably need to be the diesel and it's almost 20k more for similar spec

I've had a DS SD4 HSE Lux 2.2L for just over a year now. It's one of the models before the first update. I got it when it was around 18 months old.

There's my wife and I, that's it. However, when we see our son and family I sometimes use all 7 seats which is good because all 7 of us can use one vehicle. Mind you, there's almost no space left for luggage of an size.

Without using the third row seats the luggage space is good, not vast, in my opinion. Wife and I spend some time in Falmouth visiting her family twice a year at least and the DS is fine getting there and whilst there: buckets and spades etc. can go on laps.

In your case with a wife, youngster and a dog, you will be able to lower one of the second row seats and that will create quite a lot of extra space so I reckon you should be fine. Go to a dealer and have a play around with the seating and see if it works for you, if you've not done this already.

Looks like the DS will fit your requirements if the space checks out.

I don’t think we’ll use the +2 seats much, the allure for me is when you search SUVs with big boots the DS comes in just behind the Disco and above Q7,XC90 etc however reading your experience and varying numbers online I think there is some apples and pears comparisons here. I’ll go have a look with the pup and buggy and see how it fits. I also want to try the 290 engine and see whether it suits the car.

A Disco 5 is future proof size wise for us, it’s just it makes tackling a multi storey car park an extreme sport!

Anyone had experience of this engine in the DS?

I'm interested in one of these as well. We aren't looking to change for another 6 months though.

If you test drive one I'd be interested in your findings.

OP,

Seems you may be concerned about power. I p/e'd my Jaguar XF 5.0 V8 n/a with 385bhp for the DS and I was certainly concerned about the same thing. However, the DS is very different and I find it's performance OK. Will cruise all day at the speed you need!

By the way, I only switched because the wife was finding the XF uncomfortable on long journeys. I was not willing but we had a D4 as a loan car for 2-3 days and that was the nail in the coffin as far as me keeping the XF was concerned.

I went to LR Burnham on Saturday to have a look and play with the DS and Discovery. It’s good news the pram and dog and isofix all fit in comfortably. The wife was a no on the full Disco as it really stood out how large they are side by side to the DS.

The HSE lux is also full of kit which was a worry coming from a c7 RS6.

The deal was good thanks to Carwow but it will have to be a factory order as the 290 engine is rare, none in stock. I’m not a very patient person so still tbc on whether i’ll order.

For the price, the interior set up, the tech it seems like the winner to me tho.

We've recently moved up into a Disco Sport HSE Lux as our main car, needed something bigger and more practical than a Peugeot RCZ and we are both really enjoying it. I actually think it is a lot of car for the money and loving all the tech in it (not sure how it will compare to the RS6)

As an all rounder I think its brilliant. Getting around 38mpg average although we do a lot of miles.

I had a brief look at one a year or so ago when comparing Disco4/Q7/GL/XC90.

No matter what the numbers might tell you, they do not trump any of the above in terms of useful space. Not even close in 7 seat mode... But...

For the external size they are very good. In 5 seat mode there's plenty of room for luggage and it drove nicely. Maybe not high enough for you though?.

If/when we don't frequently need 7 seats we may consider one, but there is one other kicker. You have to really go to town on options to make them feel nice inside. And even then there's something missing IMO.

Try an XC60 maybe. Or even a 90. Easy to drive.

Ot just keep the RS6!

I don't think you can begin to compare the DS with a Disco 4/Q7/GL/XC90. They are completely different: they are all large SUVs whereas the DS is mid sized.

I agree the XC60 is a more direct comparison. Mate bought one a week ago, 2011 model year. I have not been in it yet but it will be interesting to compare it to my DS.

I was a big fan of my DS. Very very practical considering its size class/footprint.

Only thing I'd bear in mind is not really sure the car suits a highly strung petrol engine. It's definitely worth considering - I'd test drive before settling on the 290HP option.

I tend to agree...it was in the showroom when I went to look at a Disco4 so I had a go. Luggage space with three rows of seats up wasn't that far off the Disco4...it was very good on that front/internal packaging. No real need for it to feel so cheap inside (as std) though, irrespective of the segment.

Old model XC60 would not be my first choice on any level. The new one's a different story.

DS is a great car - that it even made me stop and think about is great credit to it in comparison to the others.
