So I have been looking at a Disco 1 or early Disco 2 as a bit of an off roader toy after having a go in a mates defender.

I'm new to all this Land Rover stuff but have been told the Disco 1 shares a chassis with the defender and P38 Range Rover? Does the Disco 2 share the same chassis?

So I'm interested to see if anyone has a knowledge of which bits are shared between models, it'd make finding spares second hand a tonne easier, and I'm mostly just wanting to learn a bit more about them for a start.

Oh and if anyone has any for sale, it's got to be a V8, more off road mods the better (but not required). Max budget of about £1800.

Thanks in advance!

Errrr....as far as I'm aware the P38 chassis is completely different to the Defender and the Disco.

D2 is a good shout, but you have to be prepared to to fix them, Land Rovers are not known for their reliability or ability to not leak biggrin

Not sure I would bother with a D1. They are getting pretty old and rust is a real issue on most.

I also wouldn't restrict your self to the V8s. Td5 is considered to be a good engine and with a remap, goes very nicely.

I would also forget mods. LRs are very capable straight out the box. I'd rather buy something straight, run it for a while, fix any problems that comes along and there will be a few, then think about mods.

Thanks for the reply, yeah some of the D1s are as old as me! A D2 looks the better choice tbh.

The only reason I'm restricting myself to the V8s is the simple fact that when there's a V8 option for the same money, you've gotta take it! Plus the noise they make is brilliant and they pull pretty well too.

Mod wise I was only thinking very simple for now if I bought a standard one. Like cut the front bumper down so I don't rip it off by accident and like a steering/underbody guard so I don't do any expensive damage haha

They're not the same-same. They are broadly similar design, and body swaps are not totally impossible - but are possible. Think about IVA points, though, and what body/chassis mods might be needed.

RRC is the one that's more often swapped around than P38, but I suspect that's more to do with the sheer extra complexity of the P38, while bodily-shagged D2s and even RRCs are still not that rare.

D2 is just a fairly thorough facelift of the D1. D3/4 is very different structurally.

Some of the LR parts suppliers show what models a particular part is used on - http://www.land-rover-parts-shop.com definitely does, others may, too.

People just cut the bumpers on the front of D1s and D2s. HD bumpers for front and back will set you back about £500 plus fitting. At £1800 I wouldn't bother.

TD5 sounbds great with a decent exhaust, but not as a good a s V8. AVoid LPG at that price point. Could give you a world of hurt.

Ah see i was looking for LPG ones... Haha

Going to look at one tomorrow, 2002 D2, V8 auto, £1650, 161k, odd scratch and lower front bumper snapped off. Apparently has full service history but I'll believe that when I see it. Leather etc. Looks good.

What's the deal with the diff locks on them? I've heard some have them some don't? Do you need a CDL??

Without a locking centre diff, just one wheel spinning or in the air means you lose all forward motion. With, then the other end still gets power.

D2s lost the physically locking diff, and went to an electronic traction-control based alternative, but many may have the actual hardware in the transfer box.

Rear end of the D2 chassis is the main chassis issue.
Good news is that it's available as a repair section & you don't need to remove the body to cut the old one off & weld the new one on.

Thanks again for all the responses, just an update.

Today I bought a 2001 Discovery 2, 4.0 V8 auto.

Paid £1600. 113,000 miles, Full service history. Few minor issues (door lock only works with key and not fob, heater only works on full whack) but the main thing is it goes and stops as it should, and sounds brilliant when doing so!

Has the diff locks but not connected, ES spec, got all the gear, cruise, heated leather 6 CD changer etc. On 4 brand new AT tyres. He threw in a snorkel kit for a few quid extra so that'll be going on soon, might become a bit of a project

Wish me luck!
