Range Rover bottom feeding...
Discussion
Hi,
I am going to be doing a lot of 'stuff' with the house, and will be needing to tow and be generally useful.
I also want to scratch my Range Rover itch after selling my P38 4.0SE about 6 years ago.
I am looking at spending about £4k-£5k and am looking at some very nice P38's.
I have also seen that some tidy early L322's are down to that money now.
I'm not looking for a cheap car, but a good value one, and figure that at that money the P38 and early L322 is pretty much at rock bottom for a good car, which will be a 3rd car in the house.
On a P38 I'd only have a V8 and never been a fan of LPG.
However on an L322 I am not bothered if I have a TD6 or a V8.
Question to you all is what (if any) advantages do I get either way.
If you had to choose between 4.6 V8 / TD6 / 4,4 V8 which would you have & why?
Thanks.

Early L322s are dropping like stones now. They start from £3k and I have seen some advertised at £2.8k with a few highlighted niggles.
TD6 is a good engine, but is a little under powered in something of that size, but they are cheap to remap and that should net you nearly 200bhp, which is still well below modern standards, but will be better than stock
Upgrading the infotainment is a bit of a pig unless you have a CD only stereo system.
I would personally go with the V8. Nicer to drive an in theory less to go wrong, but you can still expect issues with air suspension. Corrosion is also becoming an issue on these.
Lovely looking cars though. Still rate the interior as one of the best that LR have ever done. I still quite fancy a L322 but I really like the facelift from about 2010 with the TDV8.
Water ingress on the rear 3/4 is a well known issue and that can write of the audio system as that is where it all lives.

That's on the P38, not the L322.OP, I wouldn't recommend the TD6. It's a horrible, clanky, wheezy old thing unsuited to the waftage of the L322. First L322 I ever drove had that engine (it was Shakey Byrne's own car) and it nearly put me off them completely, but I've been running an AJV8- engined L322 for 6 years now.
I doubt the diesel is significantly more economical than the petrol, and if it's your 3rd car/occasional use it will cost a minimal amount more to run for a much nicer drive anyway.

As far as I'm aware all the audio processing and DVD drive for the nav is in the rear 3/4 (Boot). The one I looked had looked to have all this in the boot behind a side panel. This was several years ago mind. OP, I wouldn't recommend the TD6. It's a horrible, clanky, wheezy old thing unsuited to the waftage of the L322. Yes, it's like a small datacentre in there, but AFAIK it was the P38 which was prone to leakage issues affecting the electronics. That's not to say it's never happened to an L322 but I don't believe it's common.
It was identified as an issue on the early cars and a plastic water shedder was soon introduced which didn't fix the water ingress but allowed it to run past anything that might go phut.Gassing Station | Land Rover | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
