I've always gone in the high vehicles carriage (always booked as such).

I would just turn up on schedule, and after passport control, join the high vehicles lane. Noone has ever checked to see if that is what you have booked, and they are highly unlikely to move a big SUV/off-roader from high to low carriage. As others have said, the roof aerial is about 185 cm, which is the height limit. Quite why you would want to go in the more claustrophobic low carriage if you could get into the high carriage is beyond me- far more space, less likely to kerb your alloys etc.
