The service light has come on for my 3.0 disco 5 (9k miles 2 years old in feb). Upon calling the local dealer, I’ve been informed that it’s missed it’s 12 month service and it’s now due 2 year or 24k service.

Question, car is running fine, so do I call LR and log a complain the car service light has only just come on and ask for assurance the warranty will not be affect or just get it serviced and plead ignorance if there is an issue in the future ?

I don’t plan on selling any time soon and I have read some issues with these 3.0 units.

Thanks

Hello from a fellow D5 owner!

I’d be surprised if complaining will have any effect (unless you have a very supportive dealer - in which case let us know who they are!) as all of the manuals and sales info is 14K miles or every year whichever is soonest.

Given your really low mileage and the potential issues around oil dilution with the 3.0, yearly servicing is a definite going forward!

Somebody more knowledgeable will be able to comment on the likely damage from missing a service but I’d very much doubt one missed service will cause any real lasting damage.

I’ve not come across a car service light that is time based its normally just mileage based however I’d say it is your mistake and not land rovers for missing that it’s an annual or x miles service.

I’d just get it serviced and put it down to experience. There’s also vehicle smart app where I log all service info of our cars ao I don’t forget. Maybe worth a look.

another thing, over £700 for a service at LH and I've called around for cheaper, but no luck

Most cars have date / miles Audi, BMW, Mercedes etc

Was a known fault on Discovery Sport that the service message did not come up and there was a service bulletin about it so maybe worth asking this when you book it in.

As mentioned, I would have expected the light to come on early due to oil dilution that seems to be common in lower annual mileage cars.

Most are both aren't they? I do low annual mileage and I usually get a time countdown to 12 months.

It's a 50+ grand car known for being expensive to run and you're worried about 700 quid for a service?

No-one wants to feel like they're being fleeced. I'm pretty sure an X5 or an XC90 wouldn't be as expensive.

Should have bought an X5 or a Volvo instead then

What are the actual service intervals? Most cars are 2 years or 20k (or thereabouts)

Post #2 - annual services or every 14k miles.

I'm very surprised the service counter doesn't work on time and mileage. Thought pretty much every car did these days.

Maybe the OP will buy something different next time. LR make great cars, but this is not the first story I've heard of LR dealers taking the piss.

No prices on here for the Disco 5, but the previous generation car was £360 for an interim service and £495 for a major service. £700 seems punchy. I'd try calling a few more dealers.

thanks for the comments, we're changed from an x5 40d, had it 5 years, fab car, faultless, but need 7 seats and isofix is a big draw.

disco 5 is a great car, ride is 100% better, and engine doesnt need ringing out to get moving unlike the 40d (although the bmw is much quicker once going)

Discovery 4 does time/ mileage service reminders so can't imagine the 5 doesn't. Having said that the forums are littered with reports of software glitches so maybe this just another.

The biggest mistake here was not buying the 5 year service plan with the car, which is a bargain compared to buying the annual services individually (assuming you meant to actually keep up to date with the services).

bought the car 8 month's old private at a considerable discount to new with only 600 miles on the clock. Sadly, the service plan wasnt taken out the the previous owner.

...it will be fine, just get it serviced and all will be ok!

£700 does sound too much so I'd have a quick ring around - would have thought about £400ish. JLR have had issues with their dealers, most of which I put down to the massive increase in volume racing ahead of said dealers ability to deal with it.

There are signs of improvement...

It will be fine, oil doesn't magically evaporate or instantly deteriorate at 12 months old.

Its only done 9k, just get it serviced and forget it.

No point in complaining, the overdue service is your fault.

I would be looking at an oil change every 8K but it depends how long you intend to keep it

You would be pouring money away with modern synthetic oils. Each to their own.
