Hi I am thinking about scratching an itch to have a Land Rover Discovery Sport. Looking at something from 2015/16/17 with 150hp probably 60k miles.
Are there any particular things I need to be wary of and particular weak points. In doing my initial look through the ads I was surprised to see that some of the vehicles are 2WD. Not looking for top level spec just basic level.
Any advice welcome

What's your budget?

In a general sense, this era Disco Sport can suffer from a 'b pillar tick' (google it). Try and test drive it on a hot day and listen out. Only affected some.

Thanks for the feedback. I am at the bottom of the price level about 22k Euros.
Not sure if I am just opening myself up to a world of pain by being at the bottom end of the market.

I don't think there are any issues specific to that budget range of models. You'll still get a great car! Whereabouts are you? In the U.K., the 150hp version has five seats I believe and so loses the third row.

I’m in France near Paris which is why my budget is in Euros. There seem to be a good number of cars on the market. The b pillar clicking noise looks like a shocker. I found an official Land Rover service bulletin that explains all of rhe work that needs doing to rectify 😩
I hope it is the sort of concern that is either there or not and does not appear with time or distance. Do you know if it is possible to find out if the work has been done?

Make sure you doing a good mileage, regular +40mph 30min plus trips as due to an exhaust architecture issue the DS (and Evoque) suffer from clogged DPFs and oil dilution (from injecting diesel into engine to burn off the soot). While most Euro6 diesels suffer from this, the DS is particularly bad unless you give it the chance for active DPF regenerations to complete.

I've had two, diesel and petrol, swapped the diesel as although I didn't have DPF problems I had the free oil changes LR did due to oil dilution and didn't fancy running it out of warranty. Petrol is fine (economy is what you might expect for a 2 tonne petrol SUV but you don't buy a LR for economy), but perhaps not an option for you as they only came in MY17 (around Sept 2016).

B pillar was an issue for a few years, sounds like (and I suppose is) a ticking in the top of the B pillar as the body flexes on the road. The fix was fairly drastic, and not always successful. If you test drive a car, listen out for it and if you hear it walk away. Affected relatively few cars though it seems.

Steering racks have recently started failing during mainly low speed manoeuvring on earlier cars as alloy bolts holding the motor to the rack fail due to galvanic corrosion, but LR are replacing FoC if you push them via LR dealer.

Other than those points, great car comfortable cruiser and very capable off road (apart from lack of air suspension for ground clearance) if you need it.

I have had a DS for four years. I got it as an ex demo car (it was owned by LR when I bought it), at 7000 miles (now done just over 40,000). It's a HSE Luxury spec model.

It is one of the original models with the Ford diesel 2.2L engine. A big plus is that this engine does not suffer from the DPF issues that the subsequent Jaguar/LR Ingenium engine is prone to have.

I have not experienced the door pillar rattle with this car.

What I like most about the car is the combination of it being a utility vehicle, you would not know it from the interior, it goes anywhere and is very sure footed. I use the third row of seats very occasionally (minimal storage space if these are used). I've never used the tow bar.

Had no real issues other than consumables. Nevertheless, I have the LR extended warranty for peace of mind.

I tend to keep cars for 5-10 years and I have no intention to change this car for now.

Just to point out it's not the Ingenium engine at fault, it's the transverse installation and subsequent Euro6 exhaust system that's the problem. The same engines in longitudinal installations (Discovery, Velar, Jaguar XE/XF, etc.) are fine.

The 2.2 DS engine is OK as it's only Euro5 (which may be an issue with some cities current or future Euro6 only access) and doesn't have the same exhaust hardware requirement.
