Take a look at payroll manager by money soft. I have used this for a few years and works well for me.

Was using SAGE, now using www.payroo.com.

Seems to work well, basic, but handles all out needs. Easy to rollback just one employee if you make a mistake. Also as it is web based, you can run your payroll from home/office or the beach (which I did once).

I use QTAC recommended by my accountant, its cheap and the technical support is free and excellent.

There's a reason why they are the benchmark by which all others are measured.....

...not the cheapest, but without a shadow of doubt the best by a country mile

We would recommend SAGE payroll, we have 22 employees and find it the market leader for good reason, online filing interface with HMRC really good, not like some of the cheaper software out there. With a secure VPN can also use away from the office. (Plus they are now doing apps (iphone/itouch and BB, Andriod soon) for SAGE accounts so payroll should follow shortly).

I personally hate Sage payroll and usually persuade employers to switch to 12pay, it's much more user friendly and a whole lot cheaper, (Think it's about 50 pound per year.)

Download it, you can use it free for 6 months before deciding if you want to buy it.

Changed from Sage at the start of this financial year, wish I had done it years ago

Another vote for 12 Pay even if it doesn't look pretty!
