Guys,

I import automatic car wash chemicals and over time have built up, and will continue to build up, a small mountain, numbering well over a hundred, of 25 and 20 litre chemical barrels that have only been used once for transport of non hazardous chemicals such as detergents and waxes.

I have tried to interest recycling companies, who it seems want to charge for their removal even though they then go on to repurpose the the barrels, and even offerred them free to anyone wanting to collect via Gumtree but with no success.

Anyone had a similar problem or got any ideas how to get rid of these barrels as cheaply as possible?

Cheers,

Tony

eBay or Freecycle.

I was paying £3 each when I was making my own biodiesel and collecting used veg oil.

Go back to gum tree/ebay but dont try and sell them as a job lot. I dont think any person will require 100+ barrels, but if you price it at say £5 individual with discounts for quantity they should shift pretty quick.

Edit: changed price after looking at ebay.

I'd be quite happy giving the feckers away never mind selling them.

I'll try freecycle and if that fails I'll have to see about getting them shredded and dumped into landfill but that just seems so wasteful.

Perfectly good barrels that have made one journey from Belgium or Italy going to landfill. Madness.

Cheers,

Tony

That sounds like the winner if they can be pursuaded.

Plastic recycling was pretty popular 3 or 4 years back, quite a bit of money in it. Not the same story now so you will probably either have to find someone who uses them or pay for disposal. Perhaps local brewery or something?

Even if they are coming by the truck load, the haulier will almost certainly be taking a return load on commercial terms.

Try a local scout group, we use the for rafts, games & carrying water when outside with fires. (We fortunately have a supply from someone similar)

We have the same here, we sell 20 litre drums of Sodium Hypochlorite (being a swimming pool company).

The majority we send back to the supplier, they clean and re-use them. Some we can't though, so we pile those up and then gumtree them for free, buyer collects. They always go inside a day or two.
