Santander Cash deposit machines

I put £40 into the Barrow branch of Santander via the paying in machine two £5 one £10 and a £20, the machine said it amounted to £20? I returned the cash and only the tenner and two fives were returned, my wife and one other customer witnessed this, we went straight to the counter and the cashier said it happens a lot and not to worry as she would fill a form and my account would be credited. Surprise, Surprise nothing was credited to my account, after a week Santander Manager said the ATM was not up £20 so we must be mistaken. The best of it is the £20 came out of the same machine from another account!

But what if the £20 lost in the machine was added to another customers deposit? Santander trust their machine over 3 people who witnessed this, this was only £20 and I am taking it as a warning never to use automated deposits. I am closing my account due to the fact that they trusted a machine that they admit miscalculates frequently over a loyal customer.
