Does anyone here know if simply having a credit card payment machine that connects over the internet means that you have to be PCI compliant please?

Yes you will need to be PCI.
Depending on your exact circs will dictate to what level you will need to take it.
Most banks will offer some kind of PCI service where you do the donkey work but it gets you approval.

I think there maybe an exception if you use a mobile card reader and operate an account via a hosted service. Worth asking the machine provider?

What are you taking payment for? If you can avoid taking the payment details by passing to a provider in an iframe then you do not need to worry.

On a separate note gocardless offer a brilliant Direct debit solution 1% charge max £2. And you do not need PCI compliance as you never have the payment details. Depends what you are selling you may not be able to use this method as it's not instant.

Stripe I believe is also a way of taking instant payment payments without PCI. Drawback is Higher fees with these guys.

PCI compliant takes about an hour to achieve, multiple choice questions that are pretty obvious.

This.

Bit of a pain, but nothing to worry about. Just answer a few simple questions.
