Vacuum cleaner

Yes, only the most exciting of topics for the PH massive.
I've got a crappy Dyson thing that you drag about behind you while it gets stuck round corners or rolls over onto it's side, plus it doesnt actually pick much up these days. I feel it's time I upgraded to something cordless. I dont live in a mansion, in fact the majority is wood floor so it's only a few rooms that get hoovered.
Any suggestions? I've looked at the Dyson offerings, they look good and are well reviewed but I've not really been blown over with the current one and there's a Vax or Hoover models on sale for under half the price of the Dyson. Still getting decent reviews and I could potentially get one for the house, one for the car and still have change!
I await your responses (once you've asked the mrs )

Aren't all vacs pants now? I had to buy one a few weeks ago and the locals store had about 20 new 800W machines and one last 2200W Bosch jobbie which they were discounting. You dont need to think too hard which one I grabbed!
I may have dreamed this but isnt that the pesky EU reducing the power consumption of our vacuums and kettles?dazwalsh said:

I have a shark cordless and it’s brilliant. You can use it on both your wood floors and carpets. Plenty charge to do lots of room in one go on regular power setting. I think mine was about 170 but I would recommend paying a bit more for the dual battery pack if it’s your only vac. I wouldn’t go back to corded.

The kettle thing is just stupid as basic physics tells us you need a certain amount of energy to heat a volume of water by a given amount, less power means it takes longer and losses to the surrounding environment means taking longer will use more energy. I thought that had been dropped.

In reality how good are these cordless hoovers compared to a decent (i.e non dyson) hoover before the power rules were changed?
I am struggling to see how it is possible that one of these can be anywhere near as good as a 2KW mains powered hoover.
We've got a Dyson V10 absolute and I would say it's suck at max power is just as good as the corded dyson and the Henry we also have.I am struggling to see how it is possible that one of these can be anywhere near as good as a 2KW mains powered hoover.
Thanks for the replies, who'd have thought vacuums would be such a hot topic.
The Shark is looking good, I like that you can get 2 batteries with them (extra £100 granted) but if I developed a vacuuming fetish I could go for a good 40 min or so before needing to charge the thing. I might swing by Costco, I'm sure they had some in last time I was there.
Thanks again
