Could I get any more abbreviations in a title? hehe

In my ignorance I always thought that by definition a company trading within the FTSE 250 had to be a plc. Can anybody explain to me why this is not so?

Sorry for asking a dim question, I've Googled it with little success.

Do you have an example? I have the same understanding as you: all listed companies are plcs (but not all plcs are listed)

Hmm, dunno then- maybe the plc requirement does not apply to foreign companies (Plus500 is in Israeal I think) or investment trusts?

This seems to be a theme (maybe) looking through them

Syncona Limited is a Guernsey registered company so presumably different rules apply. There is no registration for Syncona Limited at Companies house.

Could it be that not all of the equity is public? Some businesses have less than half of their stock traded.

I am guessing.

Which would make sense. Plcs are a UK Companies Act construct, although there are equivalents elsewhere (NV in the Netherlands is one)

Could it be that they are public companies but in jurisdictions where this doesn't have to be included in the company name. A few decades ago all UK limited companies were call Ltd whether public or private.

Could be. Having now looked at the companies concerned I'm leaning towards the overseas naming thing.

The acronym PLC (public limited company) at the end of a company name signifies that the business offers shares to the public. It is used in Great Britain and some Commonwealth nations and is the equivalent of the U.S. "Inc.

So yes, if the company is "named" outside of the UK or commonwealth it won't contain the plc thing.

Good work PH hehe
