"Inc" is an abbreviation of "Incorporated" and is used for both private companies and public companies in the US.

The designation PLC (for Public Limited Company) was introduced in the UK in the 1981. Prior to that both private and public limited companies used the term "Ltd" .

Thanks Eric for making me realise I am old. I remember this being introduced in the days when you stood at the till and wrote a cheque. The requirement was to be able to call it Plc certain criteria had to be met and those that did largely regarded the prestige as worth having but did not have to.
