I own a commercial property (shop + office accommodation) which is currently vacant.

I've received a letter from the gas supplier to inform me that the property is now on a deemed contract.

Charges are 5.51p/kWh and an eye watering £3.31 per day standing charge.

I'm already in for £100 for nothing and would like to get this nonsense ended asap.

Can I get a contract in my name?

I've had a look on the Energylinx website but it only looks for business use and requires a business name linked to the property.

I can't see an option for an owner to have a temporary contract.

I need electricity at the property and would like to keep the gas supply connected as well.

If I can get a 1 year contract, will there be any charges associated with ending the contract early when a new tenant moves in?

Thanks - but I think that link is for owners of commercial property to buy gas and electric from BG and then supply them to their tenants.

I may be wrong.

It’s probably quickest and easiest to register the supply as a sole trader (e.g.rfisher letting - you’d just be credit vetted the same as you would for a domestic contract).

The elec meter will likely be a 03 or 04 profile and will require to be on a business contract. You could look to the current supplier to change this for domestic usage but you’d then be faced with changing again once the premises are let.

There generally aren’t charges for a change of tenancy on a business contract. The incoming tenant/owner would inherit the existing supplier and can opt to continue or give notice to leave.

If the property is vacant - it sounds like a combo of a low standing charge and a slightly higher unit rate one year contract is your best bet.

Part way down the blurb is a flexible 30 day plan where tenants are to choose their own supplier.
