Yesterday I became aware of the term “Passport Bros”

It was explained to me that they are western educated men who seek partners from developing countries because they have a more traditional view of marriage. Ie subservient.

This isn’t like the older western bloke looking for the “Thai Bride” sex tourist. Apparently it’s young guys, career minded men.

It is also apparently different from for example my friend who worked abroad and met his now partner who was local to that country by chance.

I just want to know more about this because recently I have started working remotely with a lot of western males living in SE Asia.

They generally have the same story. TEFL or IT roles, they all appear to be single when they arrive and then hook up with - often well educated - women from the region.

An example being the other day. An American who lives in China with an Indian wife who is from Malaysia. They don’t engage in the local world, but hang out with other white guys with SE Asian wives.

Race appears to be an issue - or not depending on how you interpret it. It is often mentioned in conversation. So and so has a Greek wife. My wife is from the Philippines etc, where as here in the UK at least in my experience, race and nationality aren’t an issue. Why for example would I tell you my cousin’s wife is French, or my other friend!s husband is from Uganda? It’s almost like these guys talk about their spouses like we talk about cars here. I’ve got a 330D, a C-Class etc.

I would really like sone insight to this. Is it the modern version of what my Dad used to call certain people? Failed In London, Try Hong Kong? Is it some sort of 21st Century imperialism? It seems to me to have been fuelled by the internet and perhaps covid. I can’t work out if it’s sexist, racist or none of that.

I am genuinely interested in people and cultures/subcultures so I’m hoping someone can educate me.

'Mother-Wives' is another term I've heard, which I think sums it up quite well.

A few of my Dads friends have married Thai Ladies. From what they say and other anecdotes, once a Thai lady has gained UK ciitzenship, they split/divorce.

Asian (not South Asian) females on the whole see white male professionals as solid family material.

From my experience living in SE Asia (2000s), expats typically are able to attract a more attractive women than what they would at home. These Asian cultures often have a more defined and traditional husband- wife role where the husband works and the wife runs the household. Doesn’t sound like anything has changed

I think this sort of thing appears under various guises and names. MGTOW is another one that springs to mind. Never heard of passport bros until now.

there's nothing at all in your post that is remotely new, other than labelling it. the idea that people become expats due to 'failure' in their country of origin is also a stretch, even for you.

Having seen a few men go down this road with various nationalities there seem to be two flavours.

An utterly grotesque man with boorish manners and an elevated opinion of themselves. They usually end up single again as soon as the poor woman they have trafficked realises what they have "won".

A normal guy, who's met someone possibly through a dating site or in person and gives as much to the relationship as they take. These have a decent chance of success.

Unfortunately most fall in to the first group and I think they genuinely believe they are buying a maid/sex slave, they can't find anyone at home to put up with them so think looking abroad is the answer. Quite unsavoury.

That's a perfect description of someone I know who has a Thai wife!

Same with a handful of my dads friends too - however the key difference being they moved out to Thailand (rather than bring the wives to the UK) and the wives tend to have their own small family business (roadside cafe / bar or similar) and its seemed to work well for the most part for them - none of them have been on UK soil in probably over 15yrs at least now - probably 20.

AFAIK they all still own homes in the UK that are rented, but keeping a foothold in case it all goes wrong one assumes.

Dating a lass from HK at the moment. She's younger than me, but far more mature than a lot of the women I know who are my age. The biggest difference is obviously cultural, but not for the garbage reasons spouted in the passport bros nonsense. The men who date foreign women for a power differential, are the same ones who date and abuse vulnerable western women; they will simply take advantage of any given opportunity regardless of race.
I've found that respect for others, for family and for the differences in culture are pronounced. Dating someone who places more importance on a daily video call with parents and grandparents, than going out for drinks etc with friends is a big change. Rather than getting grief if I pick her up a few minutes late, I get presented with some cakes or cookies that she's made me. For valentines day she gave me a diecast NA MX5 in Mariner Blue; none of the western girls I've dated have made such a thoughtful effort. She speaks fluent English, volunteers at the local hospital and is studying a degree which will actually benefit society.
What is noticeable is the fetishisation of Asian girls in this country. I'll always see guys looking and glancing, and have had guys come up to me in pub toilets and tell me that fking an Asian girl is their biggest fantasy.

I wonder if it's to do with how far you have to travel East to find a bride?

Sounds like Trump scratchchin

Stick passport Bros and you tube in Google.
It is a derogatory term used mostly by Black American Females to describe Black American men who leave the US in search of a S.E Asian girlfriend/wife.

There was a thread on here last year about the poster's brother or friend who was off on this adventure - shame I can't find it right now. I wonder whatever came of it.

Well educated but subservient? Sexism stretched to its limit, I'd say.
