I am thinking of buying one of these to use with my 2018 Macbook Air

Saves me having to carry any dongles and I can rest my phone on it to charge

As it has an SD card slot and a Micro SD slot. Would it be possible to put a card in each and use one as a back up for the other? if so how would you set that up?
My 2013 MacBook Air is still going strong - no issues apart from the battery is very nearly dead. Is has always been used with a 128Gbit Transcend memory card in the side... that's where all documents and photos are stored and it leaves my memory almost unused.

When the Air dies (which surely it must do at some point) I am anxious about the new MacBooks have no SD slot, so will have to buy the sort of carbuncle you're looking at. Which is a bit of a shame.

Which is why I am wondering if, due to the fact that it has an SD slot and a micro SD slot if I could use one for the backup of the other and then get rid of my time machine backups because in essence I am doing them all in on the one device.

This is weird. I use iCloud to back up my photos and get them on my various devices (iPhone, iPad, iMac and MacBook). Today for no reason I can fathom photos I deleted months and certainly over a year ago have reappeared.

Anyone know why this may have happened and is there a quick fix to delete them again please?

Hi all, not sure if this is a “support” question as such but more of a “best practice” query.

Long story short I’ve had iPhones for years, I’m a sucker and upgrade every year... and thus have my Camera Roll synced to iCloud (among other data such as Notes etc).

Due to having my settings in WhatsApp set to automatically download pictures (for several years), my camera roll and subsequent iCloud is filled with random rubbish that would take me days and days of sifting through to sort and delete = boring.

My query is this; is there a way to “start again” and essentially quickly download all my pictures from iCloud to another library/stored location (happy to pay a fee if required) easily?

I’ve had a look at the iCloud app (on Windows) and it seems relatively impossible to do this.

Any suggestions?

Edit; just realised this is an OSX thread and not an iOS thread so happy to be pointed to another thread if required!

I have started to use an iMac that had been sitting in a study at home unused. Plugged in, but not used... for years.

I am not in front of it at the moment, otherwise I could give more tech background on it. But it's 8GB of RAM and 1TB of memory.

It is virtually empty of any apps other than those it came with and there are no documents, photos or videos of any size on it.

So why is the thing so sloooow?!

Takes forever to wake up and I get a lot of spinning beachball action.

My 2013 MacBook (from which I type) is uber fast - used every day since purchase. But the iMac is glacial.

Will it speed up with use, or is there something I should or could do to it? I've installed CleanMyMac X on it - hasn't made any difference.

It will be the HDD, my 2010 iMac is slow at booting up, when when it comes to doing anything in an application it is fine, just opening them can be slow.

With the imminent departure of iTunes predicted, I've been looking for alternatives.

Does anyone have any recommendations for alternatives.

Preferably one that will cope with audiobooks as well as music.

Thanks.

If it departs, and it’s only a rumour and they have been saying it for years, it will be replaced by something. It’s only Monday. If I were you I would see if that meets your needs first

I've read around a bit, it it seems that this time rumours of its death are not exaggerated. But as you say, we'll know for sure on Monday. I'm fairly sure the Mac solution for music will be adequate, it's the audio books (of which I have many) that worry me a wee bit :-(

Weren't they talking/speculating about having separate apps for different media types?

Yeah because that’s what they already have on iPhone etc

Yes the TV app works well, but does nothing for audiobooks, but my main concern is an alternative for my iMac.

Given that iTunes and its content has been central to Apple's success over the last 20 or so years, I'd be amazed if its functionality is lost. Instead they will separate the tasks, which arguably is a much better idea as iTunes tried to do it all, and did it badly. I suspect audiobooks will be part of a music app.

Thats pretty much my thinking, but it would be nice to know for sure. There’s been plenty of speculation about how they’ll approach replacing the current functionality, but none mention audiobooks. Oh well, on Monday we’ll know.

I thought I read something a while back about audio book going into the "Books" app...
