Any help would be appreciated here chaps!

I use a 2018 MacBook Pro with a 121GB SSD (well, 128GB but I understand these only ever show as 121GB.

I'm currently running OSX 10.16.6 High Sierra, and seen as this is a couple of years out of date by now, I want to upgrade to OSX 11.0 Big Sur as it looks like it will give a totally refreshed look and feel to the Mac

I tried the upgrade process and it told me I needed 35GB free to install Big Sur, and try as I might, spending ages deleting stuff and cleaning up, I can only get to 22GB free.

I have almost nothing on my Mac apart from the OSX, my software, and a few documents. Everything else is stored on external drives and Dropbox Pro etc. There is almost nothing else I can delete.

A quick google and a read of some Mac news websites has me reading headlines like this: "Don't bother trying to update to Big Sur if you have a 128GB Mac". They are saying that it is almost impossible to upgrade to the latest OSX if you have a 128GB MacBook, yet point out that the vast majority of MacBooks sold are 128GB, because we were all told that we wouldn't be storing anything on internal drives anymore, everything would be cloud based etc.

This seems a stupid problem! Any suggestions??

I recently migrated my email hosting to a new company. They recommend IMAP connection. My old one was POP.

I use Mac Mail.

For POP accounts, there is a setting that allows you to delete a downloaded message from the server after a week, month etc. This allowed me to have multiple devices taking the mails from the server but keeping server storage minimal.

This option does not seem to exist for IMAP.

Is there a work-around?

I'm thinking an auto-archive rule set to, say, 180 days (though it doesn't say that archived messages are deleted)?

Or is it best to set it up as a POP account (is that even possible)?

The great benefit of IMAP is that it synchronises mailboxes across devices because it is server based.

Most people prefer this now that they have multiple devices. Is server capacity really an issue?

Two of my kids have burned through the 100MB limit in about 100 days. I've paid to increase them to 2GB. That should keep them going for a while.

I have bought a iphone 6S of a ‘friend’ and it has an activation lock on it. He doesn’t know the Apple ID or log in or anything so I cannot set it up as a new phone/put my Apple ID in.

Is there any way of rectifying this?

Thanks in advance!

Only legit way is for them to login to either the phone or iCloud and remove it

https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT201441

If they don't know it they can try here to recover it

Thank you for taking time to reply!!

We have tried those, and no luck - is there anyway of getting in to it without knowing the Apple ID at all?

That iforgot link only needs their name and email address. Have they tried a @me.com or @iCloud.com email address with whatever they normally use for email before the @?

You could try a call to Apple. Other than that you'd have to trust it to some iffy method of unlocking which you will be able to find with a quick search.

What exactly don’t you like?

I find Mail is fairly uninspiring.....but then again, does anyone ever get inspired by an email?

But I do find smart mailboxes are still very useful, but I don’t find search is particularly user-friendly when I need to find something.... but never have....

Its seems to be harder on the eye, the left hand column is not very bold.

Just seems boring.

Any themes we can download for it?

I am more annoyed about the crappy implementation of the new notification popups... and spotlight working like it thinks its 1985.

I have got used to BS for the most part now, but those are 2 big things that bug me on a daily basis.

Afternoon all,

I have just restored my wife's Macbook, all is fine other then it is currently on El Capitan and for some reason the option to update to a more recent OS isn't available however it will update Safari etc. Its as though when it checks it finds it is on the most recent OS.

Does the PH Apple hive mind have any ideas? Searches online seem don't seem to help.

You might have to simply search for the latest macOS in the App Store, rather than relying on the built-in update check, as that may be broken after 4 OS versions.

e.g. Big Sur

Hello all - I need to redo the room correction on my AV receiver but it's a Windows only programme and I don't have access to a PC anymore, just the mid-2014 i5 8gb iMac I inherited a couple of months ago - is it possible to run W10 on the mac on Big Sur? (and for free as I only need to use it for about 20 minutes)

Yes. you can install bootcamp.

Or VirtualBox on OS X

Windows downloads ISO from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/...

I think your Mac will be ok.
