Hi All.

New role at work, new Toys.

A New MBP (M1 Chipset) has been delivered with a pair of Dell 24" monitors, and a Startech thunderbolt Three docking station.
https://www.startech.com/en-gb/cards-adapters/tb3d... (which TBH I am amazed at the cost of yikes )

And a handful of wires......
Seems that this is not a workable solution 'because M1 chipset' : https://www.startech.com/en-gb/faq/one-external-di...

Any thoughts or comments while I wait for the IT Dept to kick in to life?
how to get the big screens hooked up and working ?
I’ve just had to isolate due to one of the kids getting Covid and used my M1 MacBook and my Ipad for a dual screen option using side car. It worked really well.

My son’s iPad appears to be knackered.

It won’t boot up, just flashes the Apple logo. I’ve tried plugging it in to iTunes to update and it fails (unknown error 4013). It then gives the option to restore but fails and gives the same error message.

It is connecting okay - iTunes shows the right serial number.

Any ideas on what else I can try or is it a trip to an Apple store to get them to work their magic?
Could be storage issue?

Each OS seems to eat up more memory. If it's a low capacity version the OS can almost entirely chew up the space.

Have you done a hard reset?

What version of iPad?
No idea! It is 3 and a half years old.

Yes - doesn’t work. Just keeps flashing the logo.

I had a look at Apple’s website and it looks like a service is pretty expensive. I might just buy a refurbished one given it is likely unrecoverable without losing data.

I had this issue - https://support.apple.com/en-gb/ipad-air-3rd-gen-p...

As I had bought it in the US in Aug 19 the Apple store declined to repair it under warranty and wanted to sell me a refurbished one. I was not happy with this and went back home and did some digging, found the above and went back. Same staff member dealt with me and was quite surprised when I showed him the page - seems their systems didn’t link it as a potential issue/resolution. iPad was replaced without question FOC. But if yours is 3+ years it won’t be this issue.

Hi all,

I've just started a new job and for the 1st time in 25yrs I've been forced to use a Mac book pro 16", what's the best way to connect up two external monitors, I have been supplied a single apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter, but I would like two external + the laptop screen.

would simply buying another adapter be enough ?

What would people suggest for the more cost effective solution to do this ?

TIA

Honestly I'd buy a good quality hub.
It will cost you most cash wise but be more durable and give you more options.
I bought a cheap multi-port adapter and it lasted 6 months. Now have a Dell Hub,

Oh if you are an employee surely the company will pay for it.

Thanks if people could name a good quality hub, that would be great rather than guessing from amazon reviews I would be v grateful.

Hi - read above a few posts opf mine. Just the same process.

it seems there is no 'out of the box'' solution but many you tube videos help to make it work.
I have found however that the mic on the MBP wont work if closed etc. Poor show from Apple that we consumers have to bodge all this IMHO.

I now have a Dell Display link hub.

I got a CalDigit one as it was somewhat endorsed by Apple (being in their shop, 'n all)

I bought from laptops direct, classed as second hand' as someone opened the box, but is as new. About 90 quid.

Morning all - not sure if anyone can help. Taking my MacBook Pro away, and whilst the battery might do me for the week for the use I will give it, I'd like to have the option to trickle charge it - if possible.

Im away on a boat so the ideal is a cigarette charger, or failing that the inverter.

The question I guess is, will the Macbook take a 5W trickle charge to top up over night? Or do I need to take the original hefty charger ?

Something like this would be a handy travel adaptor too...

Take a couple of (charged before you leave) powerbanks with you? They are quite affordable.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-Ultra-Compact-High-...
They can be charged from a regular plug ie 5v input etc. I don’t think you can do what you suggest with the laptop.

Which MacBookPro? How much space do you really need to save?

I guess the risk with the tablet/phone chargers will be the extra current draw the laptop may demand, so may overheat the smaller charger - not something I guess you'd want to risk on a boat - and it may only maintain the current battery level rather than charge it whilst it's not switched off.

However, if you're also taking other Apple devices, then the laptop charger will work with the phones/tablets (assuming they all use the same cables).

It's not like the original one is that big...if it's this type:

But if running a 3 pin plug from an inverter it may not provide much amperage. Hence the original Apple chargers might just fail to operate. I think that is biggest risk (that they just do nothing)

thanks - its not just weight / space, its also 'another charger' aspect ......
I was hoping for a simply solution. Silly Me. !
